Two chocolate advent calendars in our shop show how far apart the same 24 doors can be. Cadbury Gifts DirectCadbury Gifts DirectCadbury Gifts Direct is built around chocolate gifts featuring well-known Cadbury brands. It suits shoppers who want a recognisable chocolate present rather than something more elaBuying guide · View store → sells the Cadbury Dairy Milk Adult Advent Calendar, 348g of chocolate with a Winter Wonderland bar behind door 24, and it was £10 when I looked in October 2026. Chocolate Trading CompanyChocolate Trading CompanyChocolate Trading Co is a specialist online chocolate retailer covering gift boxes, bars, baking chocolate and drinking chocolate. Its strongest draw is the personalised Superior S2 current offers · View store → sells the Valrhona Premium Chocolate Advent Calendar, 195g of chocolate-coated nuts, pralinés and ganache bonbons from the French chocolate maker, for £38.95. That's about £2.90 per 100g against almost £20. They're different gifts that happen to come in the same shape.

Beauty calendars stretch further still, and the gap is harder to see. LOOKFANTASTICLOOKFANTASTICThis is LOOKFANTASTIC, an online beauty retailer that gathers skincare, haircare, make-up and fragrance from leading brands in one basket. It is part of THG and sells to shoppers i8 current offers · View store → says its £120 calendar holds products worth £665. When MoneySavingExpert priced the contents itself in October 2026, it came to £519. Drinks calendars vary just as much: a gin calendar's door holds a 30ml dram, a craft beer calendar's holds a 330ml can.

Then there's the date. An advent calendar is the one Christmas present with a deadline of 1 December, and the 2026 calendars split two ways. Many big beauty calendars launched in September and some sell out within weeks, while several small makers don't dispatch theirs until the middle of November.

So I've read the listings for the advent calendars we carry from Not On The High StreetNot On The High StreetNot On The High Street is a marketplace of independent UK makers rather than a single retailer, so the range runs from personalised jewellery and homeware to food, experience days Buying guide · View store →, Cadbury Gifts Direct, Chocolate Trading Company, CEWECeweThis is CEWE, Europe’s leading photo printing company by its own description, with UK production and customer service in Warwick. My short answer: pick the kind the person would actually use for 24 days, compare what's inside against the price (weight for chocolate, full sizes for beauty, millilitres for drinks), read any "worth" figure as the seller's own sum, and choose one that ships well before the end of November.

These are the advent calendars in our shop, from £3.28 chocolate calendars to drinks calendars over £100.

Which kind of advent calendar?

Chocolate suits almost anyone; the rest work best when you know the person's habits. Price ranges are from our catalogue in October 2026, with the beauty shops' own calendars added.

Door counts differ too. Advent ends on Christmas Eve, so most calendars stop at 24, but LOOKFANTASTIC's has 25 drawers and some food calendars add a Christmas Day door.

Chocolate advent calendars, by weight

Nearly every chocolate calendar has 24 doors, but a door can hold a button or a truffle, so net weight is the fairer number to compare. Chocolate Trading Company's pages give weight and not piece counts, so I've worked to weight across the board.

The Cadbury calendars are the everyday choice, and no calendar we carry gives more chocolate per pound than the adult one. The Heroes calendar mixes Wispa, Twirl, Crunchie Bits, Fudge and the rest, by the shop's description, and the Toblerone one, new for 2026, holds truffles and tiny bars. At these prices they make easy office and Secret Santa gifts.

The Tony's calendar holds 24 tiny bars in 10 flavours, plastic-free. On Not On The High Street it's sold by a reseller, mOrganics Beauty, rather than by Tony's, and that seller charges £3.99 delivery below £30.

The three chocolatier calendars at Chocolate Trading Company are a different purchase: fewer grams of filled chocolates, on pre-order. When I checked on 18 October, Charbonnel et Walker and Cluizel were marked available from mid-October and Valrhona from the end of October. The shop shows full prices of £43.25 for the Charbonnel et Walker and £64.99 for the Cluizel. On Not On The High Street, ArtChocolat's Luxury Chocolate Advent Calendar (£39.99) has 23 flavours behind 24 doors, but its listing says it won't dispatch until the week of 9 November and its order option says mid-November.

Where it hangs matters too, and a radiator is the spot to avoid. Hotel Chocolat suggests storing chocolate between 10C and 20C in a dark cupboard, and Prestat warns against radiators and sunlight. Warm chocolate blooms white; it's still safe to eat, just duller.

Here are the chocolate calendars from that table, from the £3.28 Dairy Milk to the chocolatiers' pre-orders.

Beauty advent calendars and the "worth" figure

I'll be plain about this one: our shop catalogue doesn't carry the big-name beauty calendars. What we have are small makers' self-care calendars on Not On The High Street. Several beauty shops we list do sell their own, though, so I read their pages on 18 October 2026.

Nearly every beauty calendar leads with a "worth" figure. That's the seller adding up what each item would cost bought separately, sometimes at a size it doesn't sell. The advertising regulator's own guidance notes that a "worth" claim can be unclear. When MoneySavingExpert re-priced the 2025 calendars, LOOKFANTASTIC's came to £580 against the shop's "over £655", though one calendar came out higher than its seller claimed (MSE, 2025). So I read every worth figure below as the seller's own, and I'd weigh the full-size count more.

Timing matters most here. Liberty says its calendar has sold out 11 years in a row, Space NK's 2025 calendar sold out in two and a half weeks, and LOOKFANTASTIC's 2025 fragrance calendar went in three days, according to Woman & Home. Everything in the table above was in stock when I checked, but I wouldn't wait on any of them.

To see some of these opened before you choose, beauty journalist Nadine Baggott went through a run of 2026 calendars on ITV's This Morning, LOOKFANTASTIC and Cult Beauty among them.

One of the smaller calendars shows how to do the sum yourself. Bramley's Starry Nights 12 Day Botanical Advent Calendar is £120 on Not On The High Street, and Bramley's own site calls it "worth £245". I set its contents list against the sizes Bramley sells on its own shop. Six of the twelve match: the face serum, eye serum, hand wash, bath oil, pillow spray and hand cream. Four are smaller: the cleansing balm and face scrub are 50ml against 75ml, and the bubble bath and body lotion are 100ml against 250ml. I couldn't match the lip balm or the body brush. The drawers are meant to be refilled, which suits someone who'd keep the box.

The other self-care calendars in our catalogue are harder to judge. Hallby's 12 Day Self Care Rituals says its items "may include" bath salts, candles, teas and face masks, so you're buying a curated surprise, and it's sent from the start of November. The Happy Place's wax melt calendar holds 25 scented soy wax melts, which is a simple gift for anyone with a burner.

Self-care advent calendars

Beauty calendars do get recalled now and then. In December 2025 the body butter behind day 8 of the Yepoda calendar was recalled because its preservative could fail, so keep the box and the batch numbers until January.

Food and drink advent calendars

Food calendars have the same question as chocolate: how much is behind each door. Popcorn Shed's Festive Gourmet Popcorn Advent Calendar (£32) holds 24 bags and 168g in all, six vegan flavours. Joe & Seph's Find Joe (£39) has 14 flavours in 7g bags. Popcorn Kitchen goes the other way with 12 full-sized bags, 350g for £33.

For coffee drinkers, Rise's Coffee Advent Calendar (£44) holds 24 single-origin coffees, ground coarse for a cafetière or filter, with whole beans for £1 more. For sweet things, Ruby the Cake Artist's Christmas Brownie Advent Calendar (£62.99) sends 25 brownies about 5cm square across two deliveries, and Biscuit Village's Personalised Advent Biscuit Tin (£32) has numbered biscuits from a tree on 1 December to a Santa on the 24th, with a 12-week shelf life. All prices are from October 2026.

Drinks calendars are where the portion matters most. Beerhunter's World Craft Beer Advent Calendar (£119.95) holds 24 cans and bottles averaging 330ml, nearly eight litres. The Online Wine Tasting Club's Around the World in 24 Days (£100) holds 24 glasses of 100ml from 23 countries, about three bottles' worth. That Boutique-y Gin Company calendar (£139.95) holds 24 drams of 30ml, a little more than one 70cl bottle in total, and its reseller charges £4.95 for delivery. Each is a different idea: the beer calendar is for drinking, the gin one for tasting.

Beerhunter's alcohol-free version (£119.95) is worth a closer read: its beers run from 0.0% to 2.5%, so not every can is alcohol-free. The wine calendar's listing says you must be 18 or over to buy it.

Advent calendars for men

For a man who's hard to buy for, the beer calendars above are the obvious place to start if he drinks. Beyond those, United Oddsocks' Men's 12 Day Advent Calendar (£29.99) holds a dozen deliberately odd single socks in UK sizes 6 to 11, which is the joke, not 12 pairs. For grooming, LOOKFANTASTIC's Grooming Advent Calendar was £90 on 18 October with 25 doors; its headline says 15 full-size products and its own contents list labels 16.

Toys, puzzles and books

The calendars I'd look at for children aren't toys at all. Little Treasure Hunters' Santa's Lost Keys (£29.99) is a daily clue hunt for 24 keys, with a personalised letter from Santa for £5 more. International Elf Service's Personalised Elf Letter Advent Calendar (£46.50) sends 25 letters from the elves and one from Father Christmas, which needs the children's names when you order.

For adults, Puzzle Post's jigsaw calendar (£30) has a 25 to 60 piece fragment behind each door that builds into one picture, and its Wreck the Halls (£30) is a 24-day mystery with five suspects. Readers have The Beautiful Book Company: its 12 Days of Books (£99.99) holds nine paperbacks and three bookish treats, its 24 Days of Books (£159.99) mixes paperbacks and treats, and neither guarantees particular titles.

Advent calendars for children, puzzlers and readers

If you're buying a toy calendar elsewhere, buy it from a seller you can trace. In August 2026 an anime toy advent calendar sold by several UK retailers was recalled because one figure contained too much of a restricted chemical, and a capybara calendar sold on Amazon in 2025 contained a box cutter. Which? has also warned about lookalike squishy-toy calendars on marketplaces. For under-threes, look for the small-parts warning that the Toys (Safety) Regulations require.

Photo advent calendars

A photo calendar is a gift for grandparents as much as children: your pictures behind the doors, with or without chocolate. CEWE's Photo Advent Calendar starts at £9.99 for A4 with no chocolate, and the versions with kinder, Ferrero or Tony's Chocolonely run from £16.99 to £40.99 at CEWE and Boots Photo, whose photo service is run by CEWE. Shipping is £3.99 for A4 and £4.99 for the XXL size.

The catch is time. CEWE's price list gives 11 to 12 working days for the chocolate calendars and 12 to 13 for the photo-only one, and neither shop had published a Christmas order-by date when I checked on 18 October. Count back from 1 December before you start choosing photos.

Reusable calendars you fill yourself

A reusable calendar costs more in year one and nothing after, and you choose every door. What differs most is pocket size. Penny Rose's Reusable Advent Calendar Bags (£49.50) are 24 cotton drawstring bags about 15cm by 10cm, roughly postcard size. Juliet Reeves' Reusable 24 Day Advent Calendar (£30) uses bags of 9cm by 7cm, room for a wrapped chocolate or a pair of earrings. Pintail's hand-painted wooden Christmas tree (£29) is made in Nottinghamshire. All of them arrive empty, which the listings say plainly.

Our stocking fillers collection is a good place to find things small enough to fill them.

When to order so it arrives by 1 December

Two things can go wrong: the calendar sells out, or it doesn't ship in time. Big beauty calendars are the sell-out risk; Grazia says most launch, and sell out, in September. Small makers are the shipping risk, because many sell on pre-order. These are the dates the listings gave when I checked on 18 October 2026:

CalendarWhat the listing says
Charbonnel et Walker and Cluizel (Chocolate Trading Company)Available from mid-October
Valrhona (Chocolate Trading Company)Available from the end of October
Hallby self-care calendarsSent from the start of November
ArtChocolat luxury chocolateDispatch from the week of 9 November, or mid-November
Beerhunter beer calendarsDispatch begins 16 November
The Beautiful Book CompanyDispatched mid-November to arrive before 1 December
Ruby the Cake Artist browniesTwo deliveries in the run-up to Christmas
CEWE and Boots Photo11 to 13 working days after you order

On Not On The High Street, read the pre-order note in the product options as well as the delivery estimate, because the two don't always agree. Personalised calendars take longer to make, so allow extra days.

If the person won't mind starting late, waiting can pay. Which? found some calendars cheaper in early December 2025 than their six-month average, and one r/CasualUK commenter planned to buy their chocolate calendar once it was reduced.

Allergens, dates and returns

Every food calendar should list its allergens. The Food Standards Agency says the 14 major allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list of prepacked food, but "may contain" warnings are voluntary, and a vegan label doesn't rule out traces of milk or egg.

The listings I read show why it's worth checking each one. Popcorn Shed's calendar is vegan and gluten free by the seller's description, but made where milk, nuts, peanuts and gluten are present. The Naked Marshmallow Co.'s marshmallow calendar isn't suitable for vegetarians. The Valrhona calendar contains nuts, wheat, barley and dairy, and its ingredients include alcohol, while the Charbonnel et Walker one is alcohol free and suitable for vegetarians. Ruby's brownies contain nuts, and the Biscuit Village tin uses colours that carry a warning about activity and attention in children. Beerhunter's listing says "No allergens", but Coeliac UK says beers, lagers, stouts and ales contain varying amounts of gluten, so check each can's label.

Returns are narrower than usual. Food that goes off quickly and personalised items don't come with the usual 14-day cooling-off period, and one personalised calendar on Not On The High Street states "strictly no refunds or returns". If something arrives damaged, tell the seller the day it lands, with photos.

What I'd buy

For a daily treat, I'd buy a Cadbury calendar and not overthink it: no calendar in our catalogue gives more chocolate per pound. For someone who loves good chocolate, I'd pay the chocolatier's price at Chocolate Trading Company and order now, while the pre-orders are open. For beauty, I'd only buy if I could picture them using most of the full sizes, and I'd count those rather than trust the worth. For drinks, I'd decide first whether it's for tasting or drinking, and for a family that does advent every year, I'd buy a reusable calendar once and fill it.

Whichever you choose, check the dispatch date before you pay. For the rest of your list, our guides to Christmas hampers, Secret Santa gifts and letterbox gifts take the same approach.
