For $60 a month, billed yearly, Semrush's content plan lists 10,000 AI articles a month. The first example Google gives of "scaled content abuse", a spam practice that can push a site down or out of its results, is "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" (Google). Both are on sale in October 2026, and a small business wondering whether AI can do its SEO is standing somewhere between them.
What is AI SEO?
It means two different things, and the tools sell both. The first is AI doing SEO work: keyword research, briefs and drafts, technical audits, or a done-for-you service such as
Ranked AIRanked AIRanked AI is a managed SEO and Google Ads service with its own software: an in-house team writes weekly blog posts, fixes on-page issues, builds backlinks and handles AI search visBuying guide · View store → that writes and publishes articles for you each week. The second is getting your business named in AI answers, from ChatGPT to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, often called GEO (generative engine optimisation). Trackers such as
Peec AIPeec AIPeec AI tracks how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode mention your brand, where you rank against competitors and which websites they cite.Buying guide · View store → measure that. Google's view is that the second is part of the first: optimising for its AI features "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google Search Central, July 2026).
Why does it matter now?
Because AI answers are taking clicks. AI Overviews came to the UK on 15 August 2024 and AI Mode on 28 July 2025. When the Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025, they clicked an ordinary result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one (Pew, July 2025). Ahrefs found the top-ranking page's click-through rate 58% lower when an AI Overview appears, across 300,000 keywords in December 2025 (Ahrefs, February 2026). In the UK, "ai seo" is searched about 1,900 times a month and advertisers bid around £25.75 a click for it (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026), a sign of how many agencies want to sell it.
What does it cost, and what's the catch?
From nothing to about $2,000 a year for one website. Google Search Console is free and now reports appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode. A year of

None of them charges in pounds.
The catch: the cheapest thing AI makes is pages, and pages at volume are what Google's spam policy goes after. When that policy arrived in March 2024, SEO Ian Nuttall found 837 of the 49,345 sites he monitored removed from Google's index, and Originality.ai found AI-generated posts on every affected site it checked; a few later returned (Search Engine Journal, March 2024).
The short answer: most small businesses can start free, with Search Console's AI report and a general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude to help plan pages that a person then writes.

Can AI write your SEO content without a Google penalty?
Yes, if a person checks it and it adds something; no, if the point is volume. Google has said since February 2023 that it rewards quality "however it is produced", and that automation used "with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking" is spam (Google, February 2023). The March 2024 scaled content abuse policy applies "no matter how it's created" (Google, March 2024), and Google said the changes left 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in its results (Google, April 2024).
On 1 October 2026 Google added that "it is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text included (Google Search Central). Its guide to AI search also warns that writing a page for every variation of a question, to catch the extra searches AI makes behind the scenes, breaks the same spam policy (Google).
That sits awkwardly with how some tools are sold: 10,000 articles a month on Semrush's content plan, an "AI Detector & Humanizer" on Surfer's. My view is that Google's documents care whether a page adds something, not whether software can spot the AI, so an AI tool earns its fee in research and editing time saved, not in page count.
Ranked AI: SEO done for you, if someone reads every article
Ranked AIRanked AIRanked AI is a managed SEO and Google Ads service with its own software: an in-house team writes weekly blog posts, fixes on-page issues, builds backlinks and handles AI search visBuying guide · View store → is here because it's the most literal answer to "can AI do my SEO?": a managed service with software attached rather than a tool you operate. Its homepage promises SEO "Managed By Humans" with "No AI slop": agentic workflows do the groundwork and senior staff review every deliverable (AdRanked AI). Standard covers 25 focus keywords, one blog article a week, about four outreach backlinks a month, technical fixes, Google Business Profile posts, and unlimited keyword and AI-prompt tracking across six AI assistants (AdRanked AI pricing). Articles average about 1,000 words and are fact-checked and plagiarism-checked before they reach you (AdRanked AI).
The setting that matters most for Google's rules is approval. Each article waits for your one-click approval, but an auto-approve option publishes weekly without you (AdRanked AI). I'd leave it off: since October, Google says the human check is the publisher's job, whoever wrote the draft.
Reviews are mostly warm: 4.7 on Trustpilot from 228 reviews, 88% of them five stars, with praise for quick support and steady articles (Trustpilot, October 2026). About one in ten are one or two stars, and two complaints recur: a UK reviewer in March 2026 saw no evidence of backlinks after nearly four months, and another in April 2025 called it a "Low quality AI content farm" (Trustpilot). Ranked AI replied to most, said outreach links are reported by month three, and refunded several.
A couple of its claims are worth reading closely. Its SEO page quotes a "98% Success rate" without saying what counts as success (AdRanked AI), and Google's own advice is that "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking" (Google). It also runs "AI search indexing", browser agents that ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok to read your pages, which it says "gets you put within their internal index" (AdRanked AI). OpenAI documents a plainer route into ChatGPT search: allowing its OAI-SearchBot crawler in your robots.txt file (OpenAI). Our web scraping API guide looks at that file from the crawler's side.
Google's Danny Sullivan and John Mueller spent a podcast episode on hiring help in the AI era. "Claims are simply claims," Sullivan says, and their plumber example makes the case that happy customers and reviews beat chopping a site into chunks for chatbots.
Who it suits: local and small businesses that want SEO done for a fixed monthly fee.
Less suited to: owners who won't read the articles, regulated fields, and anyone who only wants software.
The catch: its terms are Delaware law with arbitration in Singapore, no refunds "under any circumstance", and your account data deleted when you cancel (AdRanked AI terms).
Price: Standard $99, Plus $198 and Enterprise $349 a month per website in October 2026, in US dollars, with 20% off yearly and a 7-day free trial; VAT isn't mentioned (AdRanked AI).
Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking: which is best for doing it yourself?
Semrush suits people who want every marketing tool in one place, Ahrefs people who live in keyword and link data, and SE Ranking anyone who wants much of both for less. All three track AI answers, and all three are tools you operate rather than services.
Semrush has belonged to Adobe since 28 April 2026 (Adobe). Its SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 billed yearly, with no AI tracking; Starter adds 50 tracked AI prompts for $199, or $165.17 billed yearly (Semrush). The AI Visibility Toolkit alone is $99 a month per domain billed yearly (Semrush), and a free account allows 10 reports a day.
Ahrefs starts at $29 a month for Starter; Lite is $129, or $1,290 a year (Ahrefs). Brand Radar, its AI tracker, starts at $199 a month. There's no trial, but Ahrefs Free gives site owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data.
Olivia Jannesson of Style Factory finds Ahrefs better for several sites and wider AI-platform coverage, and Semrush better for daily rank tracking, outreach tools and its free trial.
For Semrush alternatives on a budget, SE Ranking's Core plan is €109 a month or €87.20 billed yearly, with 100 AI prompts tracked daily and a 14-day trial (SE Ranking).
Surfer, Frase or Clearscope: do AI writing tools help?
They help a writer research and structure a page; they don't replace the writer. Surfer, made in Poland and owned since October 2025 by France's Positive group (Positive), scores drafts as you write them: Discovery is €49 a month billed yearly for 120 documents, Standard €99 with weekly ChatGPT tracking (Surfer).
Frase is $39 a month billed yearly ($49 monthly) for 10 articles a month, with an agent that "publishes on its own when you let it", and it's refreshingly blunt that "No tool ranks you inside a trial" (Frase). Clearscope is $129 a month with unlimited users and a 14-day trial. Of these Surfer alternatives, Frase is the cheapest way in.
How do you get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?
Mostly by doing ordinary SEO well, and the free measurement now exists. Google's guide says its search ignores llms.txt files, that content needs no "chunking" and that "inauthentic mentions" help less than people think; it also warns against tools that "promise ranking success" (Google, July 2026). Since 3 June 2026 Search Console has had a generative AI report showing how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, impressions only, open to every site since 31 August (Google). Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (Bing).
John Mueller's round-up of those changes sums up Google's new guidance as "no magic trick or secret file", and covers the report and a new opt-out control.
Before paying for a tracker, it helps to know what AI already says about you, so I'd like to know what readers have found.
Peec AI: is an AI visibility tracker worth it?
Peec AIPeec AIPeec AI tracks how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode mention your brand, where you rank against competitors and which websites they cite.Buying guide · View store → is here because it's the specialist tracker with the clearest self-serve pricing. It runs the questions you choose ("prompts") through AI assistants every day and records whether your brand appears, where, in what tone and which sources were cited, then ranks recommended actions (Peec AI). Starter covers 50 prompts on three models of your choice from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot and Gemini, about 4,500 answers a month, with unlimited users. Berlin-based Peec AI GmbH (imprint) raised a $21 million Series A in November 2025 (Tech.eu). On G2 it scores 4.7 from 21 reviews (G2, October 2026).
The catch is what the numbers mean. When SparkToro's Rand Fishkin and Gumshoe's Patrick O'Donnell had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts 2,961 times, there was less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI gave the same list of brands twice (SparkToro, January 2026). Fishkin accepts a visibility percentage across many prompts as a reasonable measure, but calls any "ranking position in AI" baloney. Practitioners on r/SEO split the same way: one found some trackers "very wrong compared to manual testing", another treats the dashboards as "directional", and an agency piloting Profound was pleased with it.
Otterly.AI, an Austrian company, starts at €29 a month, or €25 billed yearly, for 15 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. Profound offers a seven-day free trial and otherwise only custom enterprise plans.
Who it suits: established brands and agencies that report on AI visibility.
Less suited to: new businesses few people search for by name, and anyone who wants work done rather than measured.
Price: Starter €85, Pro €205 and Advanced €425 a month, or €70, €180 and €360 billed yearly, in October 2026; each extra model on Starter is €25 a month billed yearly, and prices are "net of applicable VAT" for business customers only (Peec AI; terms).

On 3 June 2026, in what it called a world first, the Competition and Markets Authority required Google to give publishers "effective tools to prevent their content being used to power AI features in search, such as AI Overviews", with proper attribution and links, and gave it nine months to comply (CMA, June 2026). The same day Google began testing a Search Console setting that keeps a site out of its AI features, warning that sites that opt out "will not receive traffic or impressions" from them (Google, June 2026).
Questions people ask

Will Google penalise AI-generated content?
Not for being AI-written. Google acts against pages made at scale to manipulate rankings without adding value, and since October 2026 says a person should fact-check AI content before it's published (Google).
