The new energy label gives the Hisense 5i 10kg a full-load eco cycle of 4:59. That is a long wait beside the Hoover condenser's 2:30, yet the electricity sum for three loads a week comes out at £34.49 a year for the Hisense and £126.05 for the condenser. A heat pump saves a great deal against the old types, while the minutes and the room still matter.
A heat pump dryer collects water like a condenser, but sends its warmed air back round the drum instead of venting it outside. It dries at a lower temperature and can be slower. I've read the independent UK reviews, worked through the new-label figures and checked the shops for the same models. I'd start with the Hisense 5i, then decide whether its 10kg drum and long eco cycle suit your household.
I'd start with the Hisense 5i
The Hisense 5i Series is my starting point because there is more than a promising label behind it. Trusted Reviews gave the white DH5I104BWAB 5/5 and praised its sensor drying, app and steam refresh. It says the black DH5I104BBAB is the same dryer in another colour. Good Housekeeping Institute found the laundry well dried with little creasing, though it also found the cotton programme's time and energy use inconsistent. That qualification matters more to me than the letter A on the label.
The 10kg drum makes sense if your loads are large. In Trusted Reviews' test with a 5kg load, Cupboard Dry removed 99.59% of the water using 0.755 kWh. Which? measured £56.30 a year on cottons, a different result from the eco-label sum below. Neither measurement predicts your particular laundry.
Our Hisense page collects the range.

The longer cycle is a real condition of that recommendation. Which? explains that a heat pump recirculates air after an evaporator removes the water. The lower drying temperature is gentler on fabrics but takes more time. A vented machine instead pushes damp air outside through a hose; an ordinary condenser collects water in a reservoir. The heat pump also needs no outside vent, with water going to a tank or drain.
Lords Electrical's engineer talks through the trade-offs in this video, including where a heat pump dryer may be a poor fit.
Is there a tumble dryer ban?
The phrase sounds more alarming than the rule. From 19 January 2027, a household dryer newly placed on the market in Great Britain must meet an energy efficiency index of no more than 85. The government's impact assessment says that effectively phases out new gas-fired, vented and ordinary condenser dryers. A heat pump is therefore the kind of new dryer I'd plan around, especially if I were replacing an old vented or condenser machine.
Which? says vented and condenser models already on sale before the date can remain until stock runs out. Existing dryers and washer-dryers are unaffected. Which? also says there is no reason to panic-buy, and heat pump dryers are as safe as other types when used properly. The rule alone is no reason to rush an order.
Northern Ireland follows the EU rules, which started on 1 July 2025. The Energy Saving Trust says shops there can no longer sell new condenser dryers. For a Great Britain buyer, the question is increasingly which heat pump suits the load and room.
What does a drying cycle cost?
The running-cost difference is large between types and much smaller within the heat pumps. I used the new label's kWh per 100 eco cycles, divided by 100, then multiplied by Ofgem's average 26.32p per kWh Direct Debit rate for 1 October to 31 December 2026. For a year I took 156 cycles, or three loads a week, the pattern Which? uses: kWh per 100 cycles multiplied by 1.56 gives yearly kWh, which I then multiplied by 26.32p. The table rounds money to the penny and links each model to its label record.
| Model | Type | kWh per 100 cycles | Per cycle | kWh a year (156 cycles) | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hisense 5i 10kg | Heat pump | 84 | 22.11p | 131.04 kWh | £34.49 |
| Haier X Series 11 9kg | Heat pump | 95 | 25.00p | 148.2 kWh | £39.01 |
| Miele TEC645WP 8kg | Heat pump | 95 | 25.00p | 148.2 kWh | £39.01 |
| Hoover HLEC8DG 8kg | Condenser | 307 | 80.80p | 478.92 kWh | £126.05 |
| Hoover HLEV9DG 9kg | Vented | 349 | 91.86p | 544.44 kWh | £143.30 |
The first row works out as 0.84 kWh x 26.32p = 22.11p a cycle; 84 x 1.56 = 131.04 kWh a year; 131.04 kWh x 26.32p = £34.49. The condenser comes to £91.56 more a year than the 5i, and the vented dryer £108.81 more. Against the Haier or Miele, the condenser is £87.04 more. Between heat pumps, I'd give more weight to drum size, cycle time and the room than to a few pounds a year.
These are eco-label sums, not a promise about every load. Cotton, a fuller drum, a damp utility room and dirty filters can change consumption. Standing charges are excluded because you pay them regardless. Our household running-cost guide puts the sum in context. Ofgem says the next cap will be announced on 25 November 2026, so the rate is dated.
Which? measures cotton loads rather than using the label calculation. At the same 26.32p rate and three loads a week, its heat pump average is £54.32 a year, against £138.91 for condensers and £139.74 for vented dryers. Which? puts the heat pump range from £33.49 to £93.73. Its average difference from a condenser is about £85 a year, and it estimates the extra purchase cost pays back in about three years.
The label and the cotton measurements do not even rank these heat pumps in the same order. The 5i has the strongest label figure here, yet Which? measured £56.30 a year for it; Which? measured £37.44 for the 3S and £38.38 for the Miele. Good Housekeeping Institute found the 5i's cotton time and energy use inconsistent. The old A+++ to D label still seen on many Great Britain shop pages also gives kWh per year over a different cotton test, while the new A to G label gives kWh per 100 eco cycles. The programmes differ, so the two labels cannot simply be converted. I wouldn't choose between heat pumps on a label letter or a single annual estimate.
The Gadget Show's comparison puts a Bosch and a Hoover heat pump dryer into a running-cost and fabric-care test.
Bigger loads and more control
If the 5i's cycle looks too long, the Haier X Series 11 deserves a closer look. Its 9kg eco full-load time on the label is 3:28, against the 5i's 4:59, although those are programme figures rather than a prediction for your cottons. Trusted Reviews named the Haier its best smart tumble dryer. In its full review, it liked the control over drying level, heat and fan speed, and the app's ability to schedule a cycle for cheaper electricity. I'd consider that control if I would actually use it, rather than treating an app as a reason on its own.
Good Housekeeping Institute found the Haier dried evenly with little tangling, but recorded high energy use in its lab, especially on cotton. Which? measured £54.05 a year on cottons. That mixed evidence is a useful reminder to look beyond a feature list. The Haier range has other models, but this is the one here with independent UK review evidence and normal-delivery listings at

For a 10kg drum, the Hisense 5S and 7S take the decision in different directions. Good Housekeeping Institute called the white 5S DH5S102BW its best heat pump tumble dryer, praising even drying, the drum light and rack, while finding its water tank slow to empty. Our shops list the black DH5S102BB. Trusted Reviews named the white 5S its best large tumble dryer, though it thought the main controls could be clearer. I would put the 5S on the shortlist for the larger load and those review findings, while remembering that the reviewed and stocked colours have different codes.
The 7S is also 10kg. Good Housekeeping Institute reported that its cotton cycle ran longer than stated and slightly over-dried; Which? measured £55.39 a year on cottons. On 3 November the shops selling that exact black model were well apart in price, a good reason to compare one model code across sellers.

The load question matters more than an efficiency tie-break. This poll asks how many loads your dryer would handle in a typical week.
The 3S if an 8kg drum is enough
If a 10kg drum is more than you need, the Hisense 3S offers an 8kg option to compare. The white DH3S802BW3 has a particularly useful independent measurement: Which? put its cottons cost at £37.44 a year, the lowest of the models in this guide on Which?'s test. That is stronger evidence for its running cost than an assumed saving from a smaller drum.
The Which? measurement is for the white machine; shops describe the DH3S802BB3 as the same 3S Series 8kg in black, but Which? did not test that colour code. I found no other UK review of the 3S. For less to spend, I'd compare it with the larger picks and judge their current shop prices.

What about Miele, AEG and Samsung?
The familiar names are worth comparing, though the public evidence differs by model. Which? measured £38.38 a year on cottons for the Miele TEC645WP. Its new label lists 2:50 for a full eco load, the shortest of the heat pumps here. That makes it interesting if a long cycle would be hard to live with. I found no other UK review of this exact model, so I would not claim a broader reviewer consensus.
Which? measured £51.25 a year on cottons for the AEG TR818P4B. It says its top-scoring heat pump dryers are by AEG, but does not publicly identify whether this model is among them. The AEG fiche gives 234.7 kWh a year on the old label. AEG's UK page shows class E on the new scale but gives no kWh figure, so it isn't in the table. Its datasheet says a direct drain hose is included, which could settle a practical question about emptying a tank.
For the Samsung Series 5 OptimalDry 9kg, Which? measured £50.73 a year on cottons, under a shorter model code than the DV90CGC0A0AEEU stocked here. Samsung's own UK shop marks that exact retail code no longer available, although our shops listed it. I would check the full code on the retailer page before comparing it with the review.
The Miele, AEG and Samsung pages collect their respective ranges. On 3 November,

The Bosch Series 6 WQH246D9GB has a Which? cottons measurement of £41.99 a year but only one shop listed it for normal delivery after special-order listings were removed; no UK review was found for the integrated models our shops sell, so neither has a price card here.
Where will it live?
The room could matter more than the label's few pounds between heat pumps. The Energy Saving Trust says most makers advise against spaces below 5 to 7°C, including garages and outbuildings, because cold can slow drying, raise use and cause shutdowns. AEG advises about 20°C and ventilation in small rooms to limit condensation. I'd check a model's room limits before planning a garage installation: Miele's manual, for example, specifies 2°C to 35°C.
Water has to go somewhere even though there is no vent. A heat pump dryer collects it in a container you empty or sends it through a drain hose to a sink or waste pipe. That makes the tank's position and emptying routine worth considering before you choose a spot. If the machine is to sit on a washer, Miele requires a matching stacking kit for its dryer; I'd use the maker's specified kit for the model being bought.
This poll asks where the machine would actually stand, since a kitchen, utility room or outbuilding changes the questions I'd ask of a model.
The other habit is keeping the air path clear. Electrical Safety First advises removing lint and fluff from the filter and around the door after every use, leaving ventilation space, avoiding extension leads and overnight running, and registering the appliance. Miele's instructions call for door-opening fluff filters after every cycle and attention to the plinth filter when its indicator lights or drying slows. Samsung UK recommends cleaning the heat exchanger at least monthly, without water. The details vary by machine, so the instructions for your actual model matter.
CG shows how dirty filters can extend a heat pump cycle and raise its electricity use, then demonstrates cleaning them.
Owners in this r/AskUK thread mostly describe the same bargain: slower drying for lower electricity use. One reported up to 2.5 hours and about 20p a dry; another warned that dirty filters made drying much slower. Those are owners' experiences, not a controlled comparison, but they sharpen the room-and-routine question.
Where I'd compare, and when I'd wait
I would settle the drum size and installation first, then compare the exact code across shops. On 3 November 2026 I opened the shop pages behind every pick at

The 5i remains where I'd begin: it has independent praise, a 10kg drum and a strong label sum, with the warning that cotton results and cycle time are less tidy. If its long eco cycle or your room rules it out, the Haier's shorter labelled cycle, the 5S's large-drum reviews or the 3S's measured cotton cost give you reasons to move. The running-cost distinction is between a heat pump and the old types; between heat pumps, I'd choose for the load, room and time you can spare.
