A muddy hallway and a pet accident on the sofa ask for different machines. The useful question is how much carpet you need to wash at once, and how often you'll do it. An upright carpet washer sprays water and solution across a room and sucks the dirty water back. A portable spot cleaner does the same through a hose and hand tool for stains, stairs, upholstery and car seats. A cordless spot cleaner is a third shape for short jobs away from a socket.

What job keeps coming up?

The repeat job matters more than the largest job you can imagine. I'd lean towards a spot cleaner for the occasional spill or muddy paw print, and an upright if several rooms or a busy hallway need washing regularly. Muddy paws after every walk are a good reason to keep a spot cleaner by the door, even if our guide to wellies for dog walks helps keep some of the mud outside. If you're dealing with one whole-house clean before moving out, hiring may make more sense than finding storage space for a machine you'll rarely use.

Once mud is on the carpet, the choice is between having a hand tool ready for the next mark and having a floorhead that can cover the whole route through the house.

I wouldn't choose an upright solely because it has a hose. A hose adds flexibility, but you still need space to store the full-size body and somewhere to empty the dirty tank. Equally, a spot cleaner may be handy every week yet leave you facing a slow, strip-by-strip job when the whole hallway needs attention. The poll helps frame that tradeoff around the job you expect most often.

Would a spot cleaner do enough?

A small machine is easier to bring out for one stain, but its narrow tool makes a whole room slow work. If pet hair is part of the job, the other StainStriker versions sold by SharkNinja deserve a look for their different tools. Shark says the HairPro Pet has a pet-hair extractor and a self-wash cycle for the hose and tools, while the charcoal version has its own Rinse & Go wash cycle. Those differences may matter more than a colour change; the selection here also includes a cordless StainForce version.

Cordless access helps in a car or on stairs without a nearby socket, but the StainForce HX100UKT is a short-session tool. Trusted Reviews put it first in its September 2026 carpet cleaner list, while Shark lists 15 minutes of battery use. Its small tanks and refill cartridge also change the running-cost calculation, so I'd look at this cordless model for quick marks rather than a long clean.

The Vax SpotWash Home Duo gives you a different reason to choose a corded spot cleaner: its separate Messy Clean Up Tool is meant to keep pet accidents away from the everyday wash tool. Vax lists the Home Duo below as a portable machine for small areas.

I'd keep expectations modest for set-in stains whichever small machine you pick. Which? says its spot-cleaner tests were too underwhelming for it to recommend any of the models it tried. That doesn't erase the convenience of cleaning a fresh mark quickly, but it argues against buying a portable on the promise that it'll rescue every old stain. For a puppy accident, Dogs Trust recommends an enzymatic cleaner to deal with the lingering scent; I'd check the machine maker's solution rules before putting any cleaner into its tank.

When does an upright earn its cupboard space?

An upright starts to make sense when you can clean a room in passes instead of working across it with a hand tool. The Vax Platinum Power Max Pet-Design has large clean and dirty tanks, a long cord and hose tools for smaller messes. At 9.6kg before you add water, I'd weigh the Pet-Design model below, with its pet pre-treatment kit, against the effort of carrying it upstairs.

The Platinum Power Max ECB1SPV1 is broadly the same machine with a different kit: retailers list a longer stretch hose and a hard-floor squeegee, while the Pet-Design version has pet pre-treatment and a shorter hose. Vax Platinum SmartWash makes the repeated back-and-forth easier to operate: it dispenses water and solution as you push and uses a dry stroke as you pull. The hose tools still have a trigger, according to the Vax user guide. The Independent's IndyBest picked a SmartWash Pet-Design for whole-home deep cleans in October 2026. The SmartWash and Classic versions shown here differ mainly in the hand tools and solution supplied.

Those Vax choices are closer in purpose than their names suggest. Power Max is the heavier, wide-path option with a pet kit on the Pet-Design version. SmartWash removes the floor trigger and automatically meters solution, which may make a long room less fiddly. SpinScrub Power gives you heated drying air and a large clean tank, but you still operate a trigger. I'd pick the handling and accessories that solve your awkward job, then check the exact model code on the shop card.

Do the Shark uprights suit your rooms?

The question here is whether the floor cleaner also needs to reach a sofa or staircase. Shark CarpetXpert EX150UK has a hose and hand tool; the EX200UK adds built-in StainStriker tools, while the HairPro Pet EX220UK is pitched at pet hair. Mumsnet's EX150UK tester liked the hose and found it didn't saturate the carpet, but flagged the restriction to Shark shampoo. Those three CarpetXpert versions below make the tool choices easier to compare.

Shark's smaller CarpetForce EX500UK is easier to store and carry, but its box lists no hand tools. An Ideal Home test found it unsuitable for stairs or sofas and saw a sharp difference between its drying modes. I'd choose it for open floor space only. In October 2026, The Guardian's Filter found the CarpetXpert HairPro Pet EX300UK strong on pet messes but not as deep-cleaning as the Vax and Rug Doctor machines it tried. The SharkNinja selection below includes the CarpetForce HairPro and a CarpetXpert HairPro with StainStriker, which has hand tools.

Does heat change the decision?

Heat can be useful, but it doesn't make the drying time predictable. Dreame says its C20 Pro Steam heats water to steam and uses hot air to help drying. It also has a hose and tools for steps, so the C20 Pro below suits someone who wants steam for room cleaning as well as reach above the floor.

Two other heated uprights take different approaches. Mova says its X3 Pro Steam has an upholstery mode and tools for stairs and sofas. Bissell gives the Revolution HydroSteam a steam mode on the floorhead, but its steam doesn't go through the hose. For any washer, I'd plan around a damp carpet rather than a maker's quickest dry claim. Which? measures carpet wetness at one, five and 24 hours in its tests. Ideal Home's CarpetForce test found its Express Clean rug dry in under three hours, but a sample washed on Deep Clean still felt wet after a day. Extra suction-only passes and airflow are more useful planning tools than a single advertised number.

The Bissell owner's guide illustrates why modes matter: its Quick Dry estimate is much shorter than its SteamWash Max Clean estimate. Those are Bissell's figures, not a promise for your carpet. If you need to walk through the room later, I'd allow more time than the quickest mode suggests and use the maker's instructions for drying passes. The steam feature may help with a deep-clean task, but it also adds weight to carry and doesn't help the Bissell hose tool.

What will it take to live with one?

Owning the machine means storing it, filling and emptying the tanks, cleaning the tools and buying compatible solution. A large tank cuts refills on a whole-room job but adds carrying weight; on stairs, the hose reach and the weight you have to lift matter more. Expert Reviews' SmartWash test used about 20ml of solution per square metre, so even an owned machine has an ongoing detergent cost. A hired Rug Doctor Standard uses a measured dose of detergent in each tank, according to its rental guide.

I'd also check the exact formula and guarantee before choosing between near-identical versions. The Vax SpinScrub guide says other solutions may invalidate its guarantee, and the Shark StainStriker manual calls for Shark solutions only.

Vax says you must register a purchase from another retailer to get its longer guarantee; Shark also requires registration within 28 days for its longer guarantee.

The clean-water tank is only half the capacity story. A smaller dirty-water tank can interrupt a room clean even when plenty of fresh water remains, while a separate solution tank means you don't have to mix every refill by hand. Before using a washer, Vax's guide calls for vacuuming first. That adds a step to the job, but it keeps loose dirt out of the wet clean. A hose-cleaning or self-wash feature is useful if pet messes will make cleaning the tool itself a regular task.

Is your carpet safe to wash?

Fibre and backing can settle the choice before any machine spec does. Cormar advises blotting a spill from the edges inward without rubbing or soaking it. For wool, its care guide recommends WoolSafe-approved products or a WoolSafe-approved professional. Vax gives guidance for wet-cleanable wool with approved solution and less water; Shark advises against deep cleaning delicate rugs including wool. I'd check your carpet maker's care instructions and try an inconspicuous area before any wet clean. If the fibre or backing is uncertain, professional advice is the safer route.

Buy, hire or pay someone?

Frequency is the final test. A spot cleaner earns its place when stains recur; an upright is easier to justify when you wash several rooms often. For a single whole-house refresh, Rug Doctor offers 24- and 48-hour hire, with detergent and a stair tool separate. A weekend's hire plus solution is a meaningful share of a spot cleaner's cost, but you get the room coverage without storing an upright. If you'd rather hand off the work, Checkatrade's professional cleaning guide lets you compare a quote with hiring for the rooms and stairs you actually have.

For context, Kärcher calls its Puzzi machines professional spray-extraction equipment. The Puzzi 10/1 comes with a floor nozzle and an upholstery nozzle; the listed Puzzi 8/1 kit has an upholstery nozzle but no floor nozzle, so the kit matters if you compare these with a hire machine. Both Puzzi kits below are from Machine MartMachine MartMachine Mart sells garage equipment, power tools, water pumps and cast iron stoves. If this is about the end of a tenancy in England, Shelter says the standard is how clean the property was when you moved in, not an automatic requirement to pay for a professional clean. I'd compare that starting condition with the work in front of you. For a one-off, hiring or a cleaner may be the easier answer; for the next muddy paw print, a spot cleaner is the machine I'd expect to bring out again.
