Most big festivals want a pricey ticket, a wristband and your dignity. The Ghent Festivities mostly just ask you to turn up. For ten days in July the historic centre fills with music, street theatre, performance, fairs and stuff for families, and a lot of it is free.
It runs 16 to 25 July 2027. For a weekend, I'd pick a few things from the programme and let the free, citywide atmosphere join the dots. Trying to cram ten days of culture into 48 hours misses the whole point. It's generous, so let it be.
Why Ghent is the easy yes
If you want a festival that spills across a real city, this is the one I'd point you at. Music stages, street theatre and family shows pop up among the canals, squares and medieval streets. You can get there by train, walk between most of it, and still have a proper Ghent weekend wrapped round the festival.
Is Ghent Festivities really free?
A lot of it is. Visit Gent's programme has a big free offer of music, street theatre and family activities. Use the filters to spot the indoor productions and reserved shows that need a ticket, then build the rest of your day around the open stages.
My approach: one scheduled show, one area or stage you can keep going back to, and one block with no plan at all. The crowds will slow you down, and stumbling on things between venues is half the fun anyway.
Which bit of the ten days?
The opening weekend has that buzz of the city flipping into festival mode. The last weekend tends to pull in everyone who wants one final night. Midweek can mean easier moving around and more choice of rooms. Check the daily 2027 programme and pick whichever version has the stuff you actually want to see.
If you've got kids, build the day around the daytime street theatre and the children's listings. If you're after late nights, choose your room with noise and the walk home in mind. Honestly, those can feel like two different festivals.
A realistic two nights
Friday: arrive by train, eat before the centre gets rammed, and explore one stage area.
Saturday: keep the afternoon for street theatre or a paid show, have a break, then head back out for music after dark.
Sunday: walk the canals early, pick one last daytime thing, and leave before exhaustion becomes the thing you remember.

Being able to walk home is one of the best things about staying central. But check where the nearest late stage is before you book. A hotel just past the busiest squares can get you a lot more sleep without costing you any of the festival.
Getting there from the UK
I'd take the train via Brussels. It makes the journey part of the weekend and you skip airport transfers entirely. Check the conditions on through tickets and any engineering works first, though. A cheap flight to Brussels isn't automatically quicker once you add security and the transfers at both ends.
