Helsinki art weekends 2027: Lux or the Biennial trip?

Helsinki offers two art trips that barely resemble each other. Lux Helsinki runs from 30 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, using winter darkness for light works; Helsinki Biennial runs from 6 June to 19 September 2027 across Vallisaari, Esplanade Park and HAM. The choice is between a compact winter visit and a long, bright summer one.

What are Lux Helsinki and the Helsinki Biennial?

Two art events in the Finnish capital, one in midwinter and one in summer. Lux Helsinki is a light art festival: artworks lit up around the city after dark, in the middle of the Finnish winter, and in 2027 it runs over New Year for the first time. The Helsinki Biennial is an international contemporary art event; its fourth edition, themed Unknowns, spreads across Vallisaari island, Esplanade Park and HAM Helsinki Art Museum.

Why are they worth the trip from the UK?

Both are big at home. Lux says its 2026 edition drew 450,000 visitors, and the City of Helsinki says the 2027 Biennial will show about 45 artists and artist groups, curated by Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller. From the UK, though, they're barely on the radar: "lux helsinki" and "helsinki biennial" are each searched about 40 times a month, against 390 for "helsinki city break" (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026).

What I like about both is that they actually use Helsinki rather than just happening in it. Lux turns the winter darkness into the whole point of the trip. The Biennial leans on the ferries, Vallisaari's landscape and those ridiculous long northern days. Once the season is chosen, the art sorts out the route and rhythm for you.

Why should you care which one you pick?

Because they're different trips, not two versions of the same one. Lux is eight days of darkness and frost around New Year; the Biennial runs for more than three months of summer and depends on a ferry to Vallisaari. The wrong one for the way you like to travel turns the weekend into a fight with the season.

Lux Helsinki: worth freezing for?

Yes, but only if the dark and the cold are part of what you're after. If you're the sort who spends January complaining about the dark, this is not your holiday. The 2027 edition runs for eight days, straddles New Year and uses public light art to make a route through the city. Once the final installation map is out, it pays to read it against the weather and split the route into a loop you can do comfortably, rather than cramming every work into one heroic walk.

In Helsinki in winter, staying warm is basically logistics. A café, a sauna or a proper meal breaks the route up. Shoes that can cope with ice matter, and so does a phone kept charged and somewhere warm, because cold batteries die fast. I'd much rather see fewer works properly than tick off every pin on the map while I can't feel my feet.

Or is the Biennial the better trip?

If island landscapes, contemporary art and endless summer evenings sound better than a spectacle in the dark, it's the Biennial. Getting to Vallisaari depends on the ferry and on conditions on the island, while Esplanade Park and HAM give you the city side of the programme. The crossing is half the fun, but it also decides the pace of your whole day, so there's no pretending it doesn't exist.

The long season is the big advantage here. You can move your trip around to suit prices and weather. The flip side is that what's on during your particular dates matters more than whatever made the headlines in opening week, so the programme for your own weekend is the one to read.

How I'd spend two nights

For Lux: Friday is sauna and dinner. Saturday is a museum in the day and the light route after dark. Sunday is the Design District, or Suomenlinna if the weather's behaving.

For the Biennial: Friday in central Helsinki. Saturday on Vallisaari, with some slack built in around the ferry on both sides. Sunday at HAM or looking at architecture before you head home.
