Most people pick a city break by looking at the weather forecast and a cheap flight. What I like about both is that they actually use Helsinki rather than just happening in it. Lux turns the winter darkness into the whole point of the trip. The Biennial leans on the ferries, Vallisaari's landscape and those ridiculous long northern days. Choose your season, and the art sorts out the route and rhythm for you.
Lux Helsinki: worth freezing for?
Yes, but only if the dark and the cold are part of what you're after. If you're the sort who spends January complaining about the dark, this is not your holiday. The 2027 edition runs for eight days, straddles New Year and uses public light art to make a route through the city. Once the final installation map is out, check it against the weather and split the route into a loop you can do comfortably. Don't try to cram every work into one heroic walk.
In Helsinki in winter, staying warm is basically logistics. Break the route up with a café, a sauna or a proper meal. Wear shoes that can cope with ice, and keep your phone charged and somewhere warm, because cold batteries die fast. I'd much rather see fewer works properly than tick off every pin on the map while I can't feel my feet.
Or is the Biennial the better trip?
If island landscapes, contemporary art and endless summer evenings sound better than a spectacle in the dark, it's the Biennial. Getting to Vallisaari depends on the ferry and on conditions on the island, while Esplanade Park and HAM give you the city side of the programme. Plan the day around the official ferry slot and the island access guidance. The crossing is half the fun, but it also decides the pace of your whole day, so don't pretend it doesn't exist.
The long season is the big advantage here. You can move your trip around to suit prices and weather. The flip side is that what's on during your particular dates matters more than whatever made the headlines in opening week, so check the programme for your weekend.

How I'd spend two nights
For Lux: Friday is sauna and dinner. Saturday is a museum in the day and the light route after dark. Sunday is the Design District, or Suomenlinna if the weather's behaving.
For the Biennial: Friday in central Helsinki. Saturday on Vallisaari, with some slack built in around the ferry on both sides. Sunday at HAM or looking at architecture before you head home.
Give Vallisaari its own day. The moment you try to add Suomenlinna as well, your relaxed island trip becomes a day spent staring at ferry timetables.
