Letterbox gifts worth sending this Christmas

Four iced biscuits, a bunch of red carnations or twenty seed balls can all fit through a letterbox. They don't say the same thing. The narrow box is only the delivery method; the person opening it should decide what goes inside.

That matters most in December, when a letterbox gift solves two problems at once: nobody has to be in to sign for it, and it can reach someone you won't see over Christmas. So alongside the everyday picks, I've added Christmas ones, the sizes that actually fit through a door, and Royal Mail's last posting dates for 2026.

What is a letterbox gift?

It's a present packed into a slim box that slides through the front door with the post, so it arrives whether or not anyone is home. Flowers, iced biscuits, brownies, chocolate, tea, seeds and even some advent calendars come this way. The recipient opens it like a letter rather than waiting in for a courier.

Flowers started it. Bloom & Wild, founded in 2013, says it pioneered letterbox flowers, and its investor Piper says co-founder Aron Gelbard measured thousands of London letterboxes to work out a box that would get through about 90 per cent of them. Bakers, chocolatiers and gift shops followed with their own.

The short answer: the recipient decides. Iced biscuits suit a cheerful thank-you, fresh flowers suit someone who'll enjoy arranging them, and a seed tin suits a gardener. Will it actually fit through the door?

The honest answer is "most doors". No letterbox gift fits every letterbox, and almost none of the shops publish their box sizes, so it helps to know the two numbers that set the limits.

The first is Royal Mail's. A Large Letter can be up to 353mm long, 250mm wide and 25mm thick, and weigh up to 750g. Most letterbox gifts are built to that size, because it's the cheapest way to post them.

The second is the door. The European standard for letterbox openings, BS EN 13724, sets the smallest slot at about 230mm wide and 30mm high, according to the CWU's summary of the standard. Plenty of UK doors are older than the standard, and some are smaller.

So a box 25mm thick or less is the safe bet. A few listings do give sizes, and they show how much they vary:

If the address has a shared entrance, a door with a narrow slot or a letterbox cage, the safer choice is a gift that's happy to wait at a neighbour's or a depot, like biscuits or a seed tin, rather than flowers.

For a thank-you or birthday: iced biscuits

Biscuiteers' Bunch of Peonies is four hand-iced vanilla biscuits arranged as flowers, in an illustrated box. That makes it a useful choice when you can't be certain the recipient will open it on the day it arrives, and Biscuiteers lets you schedule an order up to six months ahead.

For a bigger gesture: letterbox flowers

The stems may arrive in bud, so the recipient gets a few days of them opening.

For someone who likes to grow things: a seed tin

Seedball's Foragers Mix contains 20 seed balls in a 6.5cm tin. The mix includes edible wildflowers such as borage and red clover, and Seedball says it can be grown in a garden, balcony planter or window box. It suits a person who already enjoys plants, and it's the cheapest gift here: £7.50, though orders under £25 pay £4 for second-class post, taking it to £11.50.

Are letterbox flowers any good?

They can be lovely, but they're a different thing from a hand-tied bouquet at the door. The stems come in bud, wrapped tight in a narrow box, and the person receiving them does the arranging. That's part of the charm for some people and a chore for others.

Price per stem is the other surprise. This r/AskUK thread from March 2026 is a fair picture of the trade-offs: the poster balks at about £30 for 11 stems, and the replies swap cheaper florists alongside a couple of stories of broken stems and Royal Mail delays.

For me, letterbox flowers suit someone who enjoys a vase and a quiet ten minutes with scissors. For someone who'd rather the gift was finished on arrival, biscuits, chocolate or tea work better, and they make good Secret Santa gifts for a colleague working from home.

Something calm rather than festive. Not everyone wants red and gold. Bunches' Winter Wisp (£31.95) is all white roses, carnations and eucalyptus, and MyFlowers' White Letterbox (£31.90) is similar. None of these shops had published their own Christmas 2026 order cut-offs when I checked, so the Royal Mail dates below are the ones to plan around.

Last posting dates for Christmas 2026

Royal Mail has published its last recommended posting dates for Christmas 2026. A shop needs to have your gift in the post by these dates, which means ordering a day or two earlier.

Second class is also changing. Royal Mail says second-class letters are moving to alternate weekdays, still aiming to arrive within three working days, and the change is being rolled out gradually. For a gift sent second class, like the cheaper Seedball option, I'd treat 18 December as a hard deadline. Royal Mail says the dates can change, so they're worth checking again in December.

• The address comes first. A shared entrance or unusually narrow letterbox may defeat the format. If you're unsure, the retailer's instructions for missed deliveries are worth reading first.
• The delivery date should suit the gift. Flowers need timely arrival; biscuits, tea and seeds give you more flexibility.
