If your idea of a good weekend is an argument about AI that turns into an artwork, which turns into a concert played on instruments nobody can name, then I have a festival for you. Ars Electronica is back in Linz from 8 to 12 September 2027.
Here's my honest take: it's absolutely worth a weekend if you want digital art, experimental performance and big science-and-tech questions in one trip, but only if you pick a thread and stick to it. The programme is far too big to "complete", and far too interesting to treat as a tour of gadget demos.
The whole appeal is stuff that won't stay in its box. An exhibition turns out to be a lab. A talk about artificial intelligence walks you straight into a piece of work that makes the argument physical. And Linz itself helps: it's compact and it's on the river, so you never get that grim feeling of spending three days locked in a conference centre.
So what actually goes on?
Exhibitions, performances, talks, awards and research projects, all somewhere between art and technology. The Ars Electronica Center is the permanent base, and the festival spills out into other venues around Linz. When the 2027 map lands, group each day by location. Your feet will thank you.
That's the official recap from 2025, and it's a decent way to see how the exhibitions, performances and public spaces fit together. Just don't fall in love with anything in it: each edition brings a whole new set of projects.
How not to drown in the programme
Pick one question. What does AI change about who "made" something? How does immersive media change public space? What are artists doing with climate data? Where is creative robotics heading? Then build around it: one big exhibition, one live performance and one talk. After that, leave a block free for the stuff you'd never have picked from its title, because that's often where the good surprises are.
Don't book back-to-back sessions on opposite sides of the river. Yes, Linz is compact, but queues and the conversations you end up having afterwards are all part of festival time. One properly thought-through day beats scanning your badge at twelve venues and remembering none of them.
What about the rest of the weekend?
Friday evening: get in, walk along the Danube, and catch an opening or performance if the tickets line up. Saturday: give the whole day to the festival. Sunday: the Ars Electronica Center, Lentos or the old town before you head off. Only add the Pöstlingberg if the weather and your travel plans leave you a genuine half-day, not a rushed hour.

The north bank is handy for the Center. Hauptplatz is better for the old town and a lot of the central venues. Book the hotel near the part of the programme you'll actually use most, not the one that looks prettiest on Instagram.
What I'd book first
Once you know 8–12 September works, grab a room, then buy the pass or performance that fits your theme. On travel, I'd look hard at the train. Compare the full rail journey from Vienna, Munich or Prague with flying and then transferring. Linz's station makes arriving overland really easy, and it's a nicer way to arrive.
