For years, "how do I record my Mac's screen with sound?" had an irritating answer: the built-in recorder could capture your microphone, but not the sound coming from the thing you were recording. That was still the position in August 2026. Then macOS 27 Golden Gate arrived on 14 September 2026, and Apple's recorder gained Include System Audio.
That small switch changes where I'd spend money. If you have a Mac that runs macOS 27 and need a clip with your voice and the Mac's sound, Shift-Command-5 is the sensible first stop. It's already there and free. The paid apps now have to earn their place with something else: a camera bubble, zooms that follow clicks, an editor that cuts the ums, a browser link for a colleague, or a screenshot that scrolls down a whole page. The useful question is what happens after you press record.
The recorder you already have
Shift-Command-5 opens Apple's Screenshot toolbar at the bottom of your screen. It can record the whole screen, an area you drag out, or a single window on macOS Tahoe 26 or later. Options holds the microphone, Include System Audio on macOS 27, Show Mouse Clicks, a timer and the save location. Unless you choose somewhere else, the result is a .mov on your desktop.
The floating thumbnail lets you trim a recording. That's the end of the editing. QuickTime Player can also start a recording through File > New Screen Recording; its steps cover a microphone and mouse clicks, but not system audio. A third-party app needs permission to record. Each app's access can be given or removed in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
The new sound option depends on the Mac. macOS 27 runs on M1 Macs or newer, while Tahoe is the last version for Intel Macs. An Intel Mac's built-in recorder still can't capture system audio. OBS Studio is the free way round it: its macOS Screen Capture source takes the screen and sound together.
On a newer Mac, the reasons to pay are just as specific. Apple's tool has no camera, no zoom, no editing beyond a trim, no share link and no scrolling screenshot. I wouldn't buy a recorder until one of those gaps actually mattered.
What you record is the question worth answering before you spend.
When a screenshot does the job
An arrow at a broken button, a blurred email address, a short clip of a menu misbehaving: much of what gets called screen recording is really screenshotting.
CleanShot XCleanShot XThis is CleanShot X, a Mac-only screenshot and screen recording app from a team in Poland. It captures, annotates and shares screenshots and videos, with a built-in editor and optiBuying guide · View store → is the Mac-only pick I'd make for that mix. It has scrolling capture in any app, annotation and text recognition, and records MP4 or GIF with your microphone, Mac audio, camera, clicks and keystrokes.
Its Basic licence costs $35 once in October 2026, with a year of updates and 1 GB of CleanShot Cloud for share links. The app keeps working after that year; further updates cost $19 a year if you want them. The same $35 licence now includes Studio Mode. Version 5.0, released on 1 September 2026, brought smart zooms that follow the cursor, cursor smoothing, trimming, backgrounds and motion blur. That's a more interesting video offer than the old screenshot-first reputation suggests.
The timing matters when weighing other people's experience. In a March 2026 r/macapps discussion, one person said CleanShot met most of the asker's needs but lacked zoom-ins and full editing; another used it every day for screenshots but found the video quality poor. Both comments predate version 5.0. The thread also ranges across Shift-Command-5,
CapCapThis is Cap, an open source screen recorder for Mac, Windows and Linux, started in 2023 as an alternative to Loom. You record, edit with zooms and backgrounds, and share a link.Buying guide · View store → and OBS, so it's useful for seeing what Mac users choose for different jobs.
For a look at the changed editor, ScreenCastsONLINE, a long-running Apple tutorial channel, demonstrates Studio Mode in October 2026. The video shows cursor smoothing, microphone and system-audio balance, resizing the webcam bubble after recording, and a CleanShot Cloud upload for a link.
There isn't a free trial. CleanShot has a 30-day money-back guarantee and is also in Setapp, a Mac-app bundle costing $14.99 a month plus tax in October 2026.
For screenshots alone, Shottr gives you scrolling capture, annotation and text recognition free for as long as you like, but no video. If you move between a Mac and Windows, Snagit works on both, records screen and webcam with system audio, and uses step capture to build a how-to guide as you click. It costs £34.64 a year in October 2026. For a Mac user who wants both screenshots and occasional video, I'd still pay once for CleanShot.
When the demo needs polish
A product demo asks more of the picture than an annotated bug clip. The screen can glide towards a click, the cursor can move smoothly, and the recording can sit on a coloured background. Screen Studio is built around that look on a Mac: it records the screen without the cursor, then draws the cursor back in for smoothing, resizing and click zooms. It adds a camera cutout, system audio and iPhone or iPad recording over USB.
For new buyers, that's a subscription at $9 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly in October 2026. The $229 one-time licence was withdrawn for new customers in October 2025. In the r/macapps discussion, the asker rejected it as expensive, while others still chose it for auto-zoom demos. David Alex, whose March 2026 comparison says they've made more than 4,000 videos, praises the polish but reports audio clipping on longer recordings and unresponsive support. That's experience worth weighing if your demos run long.
Their comparison puts Screen Studio beside Loom and

For a launch video assembled from several pieces,
KiteKiteThis is Kite, a Mac screen recorder and editor from a San Francisco company, built for product launch and demo videos. It adds automatic zooms, device mockups and AI voiceovers so Buying guide · View store → goes further. It records a Mac and iPhone, combines recordings, imports other media, and adds 3D device mockups, animated text, music and AI voiceovers. Kite says recordings stay on your computer unless you share them or use an AI feature. Its free plan watermarks every export; Pro costs $40 a month billed yearly in October 2026. I'd reserve that extra production for launch videos or feature announcements, where several clips and those additions have a purpose.
For a demo once a month, the smaller options are persuasive.

You record, edit with zooms and backgrounds, and share a link.Buying guide · View store →'s Studio Mode records screen, camera and microphone as separate tracks and zooms on clicks; it's free for personal use or $58 once for work. I'd start with one of those before taking on Screen Studio's subscription. If social clips are the point, our social media scheduling guide covers what happens after export.
When someone else needs the link
A colleague who needs a bug explained or a design talked through may be better served by a short video they can open in a browser. It can replace a meeting or a long written explanation. This is where the sharing and editing around the recording matter more than a cinematic zoom.
Loom is the straightforward work-message choice, especially if your company already uses it. Its free Starter plan allows 25 videos per person, five minutes each, at up to 720p. Business is $18 per user a month, or $180 a year billed annually, in October 2026; it removes Loom branding and allows unlimited videos and recording time. Every plan captures system audio and puts your camera in a bubble. David Alex rates it for quick business messages you can track.
I'd look harder at

Pro is $12 per user a month, adding unlimited cloud sharing plus AI titles, summaries and transcripts. Cap also lists Intel Macs from macOS 13.1. Several people in the r/macapps thread recommended it; one said the free version had almost every feature the asker wanted. For a small setup, the $58 licence is where I'd begin.

David Alex calls it the all-in-one option of their three and the most expensive; the video's description links to all three apps, with a discount on Tella.
For teams that file bugs in Linear,
SupercutSupercutThis is Supercut, a screen recorder for team video messages, made by Float Labs. You record your screen and camera, get an edited, shareable link, and it comes with AI chapters and1 current offer · View store → has a more specific appeal. Its AdMac and Windows apps record screen and camera at up to 4K, auto-edit mistakes, silences and filler, add AI chapters and a summary, and connect to Linear and Notion. AdPro is £12 per seat a month billed yearly, excluding VAT, in October 2026. There's no monthly billing, and the 14-day trial starts when you first record or upload a video. I'd look at that Linear connection before defaulting to Loom for bug reports.
Sometimes the result doesn't need to be a video at all. For a live call, an AI note-taker can write up the meeting. If you'd rather speak a bug report than type it, dictation software turns your voice into ticket text.
When you're making a course
A long tutorial is usually built in takes, with titles, callouts, captions and music arranged on a timeline. The editor becomes more important than the button that starts recording. Camtasia, TechSmith's editor, makes sense to me for that job.
Its yearly prices are in pounds in October 2026: Starter is £34.64 and bundles Snagit with a Camtasia editor that watermarks exports; Essentials is £159.78 and removes the watermark while adding text-based editing; Create is £221.18 and adds script and voiceover generation; Pro is £532.09. VAT isn't stated. Every plan requires macOS 14 or later and has a 14-day money-back guarantee.
ScreenFlow is the Mac-only licence alternative, at $199 in October 2026. It captures screen, camera and microphone together, can record an iPhone or iPad, and edits across multiple tracks with captions. The free trial watermarks exports. I'd take the compatibility question seriously before paying: Telestream's store names Sequoia and Sonoma but gives no Tahoe or Golden Gate support information, and version 10.5 in August 2025 was its first update since October 2023. A working trial on your own Mac matters here.
OBS Studio is free and can mix your screen and webcam in scenes, but it doesn't supply the timeline editor this job needs. For a course, I'd choose Camtasia Essentials as the supported editor; ScreenFlow is the pay-once possibility after a successful trial.
When the clip is gameplay
Gameplay clips have another rhythm: a recorder runs in the background and keeps the last few minutes, then a key press saves what just happened.
MedalMedalThis is Medal, a game clipping app that records in the background on your Windows PC and saves the moment you press a hotkey. You get an instant link to share, with apps for iPhoneBuying guide · View store → does that on PC, but its downloads cover Windows, iPhone and Android, with no Mac version listed. The Mac gap was the point of a January 2026 r/macgaming discussion: its starter had used NVIDIA ShadowPlay and SteelSeries GG on Windows, and neither works on macOS.
That discussion shows what Mac players reach for when those Windows tools aren't available.
The two free routes are OBS Studio and Steam Game Recording. OBS has a Replay Buffer under Settings and Output: you choose its length and a hotkey to save a clip. Steam Game Recording has worked on Mac since November 2024. Its background mode records within limits you set and includes trimming and sharing, but it works through the Steam client and doesn't capture the desktop or other programs. In that r/macgaming thread, replies favoured OBS's replay buffer if you don't mind setting it up, and Steam if most of your games run there; a few replies came from developers promoting their own clipping apps.
What will it cost?
Once you know the job, the way an app charges can settle a close choice. Most of these prices are in US dollars. Some buy you a licence, others a monthly or yearly plan, and a few give you a limited free tier. The table below puts the different payment models side by side.

Where I'd land
On an M1 Mac or newer, I'd give Shift-Command-5 a week before paying for anything. If a trimmed .mov does the job, the new system-audio switch has saved you a purchase. If it doesn't, I'd pay for the exact part that slows you down after recording, whether that's
