The main present gets weeks of thought. The stocking gets filled in a hurry in December, £3 here and £5 there, and by the time it's full it has often cost as much as the main present, on things that are in a drawer or the bin by Boxing Day.
Fill four of them, for a toddler, a ten-year-old, a teenager and the other adult in the house, and the small costs turn into a proper bill. I don't think the answer is to spend less so much as to decide what each thing is for. My rule is one thing to eat, one thing they'll use, and one thing that's simply fun to unwrap, with a budget set per stocking before the first click and as few shops as possible, so the postage doesn't eat the difference.
Below are picks from UK shops for young children, teenagers and adults, all £15 or under, each with the reason it's there. If you'd rather browse, our stocking fillers collection holds everything we list at £15 or less, with a price filter.
Set a budget per stocking, then count
No single stocking filler feels like spending, which is exactly the problem. So I'd set a number for each stocking first and count every item against it, delivery included.
This is how quickly it adds up. On 18 October 2026, I priced a small teenager's stocking from three shops:
| What | Shop | Price | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| A pocket pen and a pocket pencil | Papersmiths | £14 | £3.95 |
| Bouldering socks | The London Sock Exchange, on Not On The High Street | £12 | £2.79 |
| Track Stats F1 card game | PIXELPETE, on Not On The High Street | £12.99 | £1.70 |
| Total | £38.99 | £8.44 |
That's three small presents and £47.43 at the checkout, with almost a fifth of it going on postage. Two habits bring it down.
The first is to buy from fewer sellers. On Not On The High StreetNot On The High StreetNot On The High Street is a marketplace of independent UK makers rather than a single retailer, so the range runs from personalised jewellery and homeware to food, experience days Buying guide · View store →, every seller charges its own delivery: the site's delivery guide says standard delivery is free for the majority of products or £3.99 per seller, and more items of a similar size from the same seller don't add to the charge. Most of the sellers below also deliver free once you spend £30 with them. Two pairs of socks from one sock seller cost less to send than one pair each from two.
The second is to buy for several stockings in one order. PapersmithsPapersmithsThis is Papersmiths, an independent stationery shop that opened in Bristol in 2013 and now has stores in Brighton and Chelsea. It sells its own pens, notebooks and diaries alongsid3 current offers · View store → charges £3.95 for Royal Mail Tracked 48, or nothing over £40, so a pen for one stocking and a pencil for another share a single charge. The same sums apply to an office swap, which our Secret Santa gifts guide works through for a £10 limit.
There's no right number per stocking, and I'd like to know where yours sits.
What makes a good stocking filler
A good stocking filler is small enough to fit, cheap enough that a dozen don't add up to a second present, and something the person will eat, use or play with. Being fun to unwrap matters too, since the pleasure of a stocking is a run of small surprises rather than one big one.
Where it goes wrong is the thing bought to fill space. In a Which? survey of 2,047 adults about Christmas 2024, one in five (21%) had received an unwanted or unsuitable present. Few binned it: 2% threw it away, a third got rid of it in other ways, mostly by giving it on or selling it, and 15% kept it knowing they'd never use it. A novelty that lives in a drawer until spring is the same waste, just slower.
That's why I'd lean on things that get used up. Chocolate, tea, coffee, a bar of good soap, a hot sauce, socks that get worn: none of them needs a home in January. Then add one thing that lasts, chosen for that person, such as a pen they'll carry, a decoration they'll hang every year or a game that comes out at New Year.
To see a budget stocking come together, the YouTuber Freya Farrington's UK guide sorts small gifts into price bands from under £5, and most of what she lists in its description is something to eat, drink or use.
Every household has its fixtures, whether that's the satsuma in the toe or the chocolate coins. What are yours?

For young children, check the label first
A small child's stocking carries a risk an adult's doesn't. It gets opened on the bedroom floor, often before anyone else is up, and in a house with a toddler and an older child, the small parts from one stocking can end up in the other child's mouth.
The rules are clear about this. Under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, toys meant for children under 36 months mustn't have parts small enough to be swallowed or inhaled. Toys that might be dangerous to under-3s have to say so, with a warning such as "Not suitable for children under 36 months" and a short note of the hazard, usually small parts. And a warning that would affect your decision has to be visible before you buy, including online.
The checks I'd make on any toy for a small child:
An age, and a reason.
Look for a minimum age, and for an under-3s warning with its reason. A listing with no age at all is worth a message to the seller before you buy.
A UKCA or CE mark.
Either is valid in Great Britain, and the
government's guidance
says CE marking is now recognised indefinitely.
RoSPA
describes the mark as the manufacturer's claim that the toy meets the requirements, not a test result.
A name and an address.
The maker's or importer's name and a UK postal address should be on the toy, its packaging or the listing.
No loose button batteries or small magnets.
The
Child Accident Prevention Trust
warns that a swallowed button battery can burn through a child's food pipe within hours. A
study reported by Alder Hey Children's Hospital
found around 300 UK children went to A&E in a year after swallowing magnets. The
Office for Product Safety and Standards
says any button battery should sit behind a screwed-down flap, and that festive novelties can look like toys when they should be kept away from children.
A mark on its own isn't proof, which is why I'd buy toys from sellers who give their details. In June 2026, the British Toy & Hobby Association, the toy industry's trade body, had 89 toys from third-party sellers on seven online marketplaces tested, and 80 of them failed; 65% of the unsafe ones carried a CE or UKCA mark anyway. The government's online shopping advice says the same: even trusted marketplaces sometimes sell unsafe products, so look at the seller's rating and UK contact details.
With that in mind, these are the children's picks I'd consider. For a baby or toddler, Just Bee Kids' wooden clock puzzle on Not On The High StreetNot On The High StreetNot On The High Street is a marketplace of independent UK makers rather than a single retailer, so the range runs from personalised jewellery and homeware to food, experience days Buying guide · View store → is marked "Suitable for 12M+" on its page, and it was £11.24 in October 2026 against a full price of £14.99. The same seller's pull-along snail shows no age on its page, which is exactly when I'd ask before buying.
For roughly three to eight, Cotton Twist's rainbow beading kit makes five bracelets, and the seller says it's UKCA and CE tested and marked. The beads are small, though, so it's one to open at the kitchen table, away from a younger brother or sister. Clara and Macy's paper chain kit makes a garland of Christmas greenery and comes with glue dots instead of a pot of glue, which keeps Boxing Day crafting tidy. Teenagers: things they'll carry, wear or play
Teenagers are the hardest stocking, because the novelty that delights a seven-year-old gets an eye-roll at fifteen. I'd give them small versions of what adults like: something good to write with, socks with some personality, a game and sweets.

Papersmiths had a score of 4.8 from 118 reviews on Trustpilot when I checked on 18 October 2026.

PIXELPETE's Track Stats F1 is a trumps-style card game of Formula 1 circuits, compared on lap times, length, straights and turns. Its maker pitches it at grown-ups, but it suits any teenager who watches every race.
For a teenager who likes making things, the Sock Creatures kit turns a pair of socks into a stuffed sausage dog, with the needle and thread included, which makes it one for older children only. Stocking fillers for adults
I think the adult stocking is the easier one to get right, because you know the person's habits: what they drink in the morning, what they cook, what they'd never buy for themselves. The rule is the same as for children, with nicer things in it.
Food comes first. A 70g Chocolarder bar from Chocolate Trading CompanyChocolate Trading CompanyChocolate Trading Co is a specialist online chocolate retailer covering gift boxes, bars, baking chocolate and drinking chocolate. Then something to use up. Natural & Noble's pudding tea is 12 bags in six flavours based on British puddings, and the seller delivers it free (£12.99). The same maker's gin infusions are 12 flavour bags to drop into a measure of gin, so they suit someone who already keeps a bottle. Girls Who Grind Coffee's Girl Crush is a medium roast the roaster recommends for espresso and a French press (£10). Bramley's hand cream cracker holds a 50ml tube of its lavender, geranium and petitgrain hand cream (£12), and The Natural Spa's soap sampler is eight small vegan, palm-free bars in letterbox-sized packaging, £11.97 in October 2026 against a full price of £19.95.
And one thing to keep. AURA QUE's Nordic socks are 100% wool, hand-knitted by a World Fair Trade Organization certified collective in Kathmandu, and made for lounging rather than walking (£12.50, against a full price of £25). PIXELPETE's Test Cricket quiz has 200 questions on 50 cards (£13.99), for whoever will be quizzing the table on Boxing Day.

Chocolate, for every stocking
Chocolate is the stocking filler nobody minds, and the cheapest way to make every stocking feel full. For December itself, our advent calendars guide weighs the chocolate behind each door. For more, our Christmas chocolate collection runs from selection boxes to truffles. And the foil needn't go in the bin. Many councils take clean chocolate foil if it's squashed together: St Helens Council, for example, asks for wrappers scrunched into a ball the size of a tennis ball, and its scrunch test tells foil, which stays scrunched, from plastic, which springs back. Your own council's website will say what it takes.
Eat it now, or keep it for years?
A stocking of only things to eat is gone by lunchtime, which some people love and others find a little flat. A keepsake earns its place when it comes back every year. One decoration per child, added each Christmas, becomes a tree full of them by the time they leave home. The stocking fillers collection is full of these, from recycled glass baubles to wooden ornaments, all at £15 or under.

A name on it makes a keepsake, but it changes two things. Personalised goods aren't covered by the usual 14-day right to cancel an online order, under regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations, so you can't send one back because you've changed your mind. And they take longer: Not On The High Street's delivery guide says personalised and made-to-order products can take up to 30 days to make. I'd order those first and the chocolate last.
Getting it all there by Christmas
Every shop sets its own Christmas cut-offs, and by mid-October most hadn't published them. These had, when I checked on 18 October 2026:
Chocolate Trading Company
: Friday 18 December for its Supersaver and Saver services, Monday 21 December for Standard Tracked, and Wednesday 23 December for next-day delivery on the mainland, each by 4pm.
The Blossomist
: order by 22 December for delivery before Christmas.
Not On The High Street
hadn't set dates, but advises ordering personalised and handmade items well in advance and anything else at least two weeks before Christmas. Each product page shows its own estimated delivery date.
Many small shops post by Royal Mail, whose last posting dates for 2026 are Friday 18 December for 2nd Class, Saturday 19 December for Tracked 48, Monday 21 December for 1st Class and Tracked 24, and Wednesday 23 December for Special Delivery. Those are the dates a shop has to post by, not the dates you have to order by. For Papersmiths, TruffleHunter and Cadbury Gifts Direct, check each shop's delivery page before you order.
I'd aim to have everything in the house by mid-December, which leaves time to wrap and a margin for the parcel that goes astray. If you're sending a small stocking to someone you won't see, our letterbox gifts guide covers what fits through the door, and if an adult on your list would rather have one big box of food, our Christmas hampers guide reads the contents lists for you.
If I were filling four stockings this weekend, I'd set a number for each, buy all the chocolate in one order, put the socks and pens with as few sellers as I could, check the age on anything for the toddler, and leave out whatever I'd only bought to fill the toe. Six things that get eaten, worn or played with make a better stocking than twelve that don't.
