Typeform's free plan takes 10 responses a month, shared across every form you make. On Basic, the cheapest paid plan, it's 100 a month, and when you reach the limit Typeform puts your forms into private mode until the month resets. Nobody can fill them in. For a sign-up form doing the rounds of a WhatsApp group on a Friday night, that's a weekend of lost answers.
What is a form builder?
It's a tool that turns a list of questions into a page people can fill in, then gathers the answers in one place: a table, a spreadsheet or another app. People use them for surveys, contact and lead forms, quizzes, orders and bookings. Google Forms and Microsoft Forms come free with accounts most of us already have; Typeform, Tally,
FilloutFilloutFillout is an online form builder for surveys, quizzes, order forms, bookings and signatures, with payments through Stripe and links to Airtable, Notion, HubSpot and 50+ other appsBuying guide · View store → and Jotform are the standalone builders people weigh up once they need more.
Why are so many people looking for Typeform alternatives?
Mostly price, and because the free tools caught up. In the UK, "typeform pricing" is searched about 390 times a month, while people search for
FilloutFilloutFillout is an online form builder for surveys, quizzes, order forms, bookings and signatures, with payments through Stripe and links to Airtable, Notion, HubSpot and 50+ other appsBuying guide · View store → by name 2,400 times and "tally forms" 1,300 (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026). Typeform scores 2.7 from 783 reviews on Trustpilot in October 2026, and a marketing firm reviewing it in March 2026 called it "overpriced for the functionality available". Zapier's September 2026 roundup lists its "very limited free plan" as the main drawback.
What does Typeform cost over a year, and what's the catch?
Between £252 and £840 a year plus VAT for most small businesses. In October 2026 Typeform's UK prices are Basic at £30 a month or £252 a year (100 responses a month, one user), Plus at £60 or £504 (1,000 responses, three users, no Typeform branding) and Business at £100 or £840 (10,000 responses, five users). Typeform adds VAT for UK buyers, or zero-rates the invoice if you add a VAT number.
The catch most people miss is the auto-upgrade. On Basic, the 101st response moves you to a 250-response tier and bills the difference; the switch is on by default when you upgrade from the free plan, and the higher tier carries into your next billing period unless you change it. Deleting responses doesn't give any back. And EU hosting is only on Enterprise and Growth Custom plans; everyone else's answers sit on servers in Virginia.
If you're weighing up a move, I'd like to know what's pushing you.
The short answer: for most people Tally is the best free Typeform alternative, with unlimited forms and responses within its fair-use rules, file uploads, logic and Stripe payments on the free plan, and form data stored in Europe.

The right builder depends on what the form is for, so I'd like to know what yours will mostly do.
Is Tally the best free Typeform alternative?
For most people, yes. Tally's pricing page offers unlimited forms and submissions free "as long as you stay within our fair usage guidelines", and the free plan includes file uploads, conditional logic, calculations, signatures, Stripe payments and connections to Google Sheets, Notion, Airtable, Zapier and Make. Tally says 99% of its features are free. You build a form the way you'd write a document, which suits anyone who finds drag-and-drop builders fiddly.
The limits are generous but real. Free uploads are capped at 10 MB a file, though respondents don't have to sign in, unlike Google Forms. Accounts that consistently pass about 50,000 submissions a month move to a custom plan under the fair-use policy. Payments go through your own Stripe account and Tally adds no fees of its own, but it can't take recurring payments, and receipts come from Stripe rather than proper invoices. Removing the Tally badge, custom domains and partial submissions need Pro, at $29 a month or $290 a year. Tally bills in US dollars or euros depending on where you are, with no free trial.
David Alex, whose video description says he partners with Tally, builds the same form in both tools. He says one of his clients pays Typeform more than $1,000 a year, and that an event form of his took about 9,000 submissions on Tally.
Who it suits: anyone who wants unlimited free forms, from freelancers to clubs and charities.
Less suited to: subscriptions, invoiced sales and forms that need heavy visual branding.
The catch: the badge stays on free forms, and Tally's signature field isn't yet accessible to keyboard or screen reader users.
Price: free; Pro is $29 a month or $290 a year in October 2026.
Is Fillout better than Typeform?
For forms that do more than collect answers, often yes, and it costs less.
FilloutFilloutFillout is an online form builder for surveys, quizzes, order forms, bookings and signatures, with payments through Stripe and links to Airtable, Notion, HubSpot and 50+ other appsBuying guide · View store →'s free plan takes Ad1,000 responses a month with unlimited forms and seats, payments, scheduling, PDF generation, conditional logic, calculations and file uploads up to 20 MB. Its pricing FAQ says that if you go over, "your forms will still collect responses", and you can upgrade, buy more or wait for the monthly reset. That's a gentler landing than Typeform's private mode.
Paid plans in October 2026 are Starter at $15 a month billed yearly ($19 monthly, 2,000 responses, signatures, light branding), Pro at $40 ($49 monthly, 5,000 responses, no branding) and Business at $75 ($89 monthly, unlimited responses, a custom domain, drop-off analytics, the Meta Pixel and partial submissions), according to AdFillout's pricing page. AdEvery plan is billed in US dollars, so your card's exchange rate applies.
Payments are where Fillout pulls ahead. One-off, subscription and pay-what-you-want payments go through Stripe on Adevery plan, with no Fillout fee on top of Stripe's. It won't add VAT to your prices automatically, even when Stripe is set up for it, so VAT-registered sellers build it in with a calculation. A form can also Adbook a meeting through Fillout's own scheduling, Calendly or
Cal.comCal.comCal.com is a scheduling app that turns your availability into a booking link, checks your calendars for clashes and sends reminders. It suits freelancers, coaches, sales and suppor1 current offer · View store →, which suits a sales call or consultation that starts with a few questions.
Lex Roman, an independent newsletter publisher, shows Fillout onboarding paid subscribers, booking newsletter ads with a Stripe payment inside the form and collecting signed contributor agreements. The video's description carries an affiliate link to Fillout.
At the top tiers the sums close in. One r/nocode user on a paid plan wanted a Meta Pixel, no branding and an HTML embed, and found that meant $89 a month at Fillout or $99 at Typeform. In October 2026 the Pixel and custom code are still Business features on Fillout.
Answers are Adstored in the US by default, with EU hosting only on the Team and Enterprise plans.
Who it suits: small businesses whose forms take money, book calls, gather signatures or produce documents.
Less suited to: anyone who needs EU hosting without a large plan.
The catch: dollar billing, and the Meta Pixel, partial submissions and custom domain wait until Business.
Price: free for 1,000 responses a month; Starter is $180 a year in October 2026.
When is Typeform still worth paying for?
When the experience of filling in the form matters more than the bill. Typeform shows one question at a time, and Zapier picks it for conversational forms and calls its user experience "awesome". Branching and calculations are on even the free plan, though file uploads, payments and removing the branding are not.
The trade-offs go beyond the response caps. The payment question needs Basic or higher and isn't available on accounts that use Typeform's EU data centre, so EU hosting and payments don't mix. On accessibility, Typeform says forms embedded in a web page or sent in an email haven't been tested yet.
Who it suits: brands whose forms are part of the marketing, such as quizzes and lead forms on a landing page.
Less suited to: anything with unpredictable volume, and teams that need EU hosting on a small budget.
The catch: response limits that either switch your forms off or move you up a tier.
Price: Basic is £252 a year plus VAT in October 2026 (Typeform).
Is Google Forms or Microsoft Forms good enough?
For internal surveys, sign-up sheets and quick feedback, yes, and they cost nothing extra. Google Forms has 12 question types but no payment question, and a file-upload question makes respondents sign in to a Google account. Choosing where data is stored needs Workspace Business Standard or above, and the choice is the US or Europe, not the UK.
Microsoft Forms takes up to 200 responses a form on a free personal account and 1,000 on a paid one, against 5,000,000 on a work or school account. File uploads only work when respondents are in your organisation, so clients can't send you documents through one. For UK work accounts, Microsoft keeps Forms data in Europe.
Where they fall short is anything a customer sees. A door-to-door window cleaner on r/smallbusiness wanted a free form to hand customers on an iPad and found Google Forms had no app for it; replies suggested Youform, Tally and forms.app, and a later one said Jotform ended up fitting.
Who it suits: offices already on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
Less suited to: payments, client uploads and forms that carry your brand.
What about Jotform?
Jotform is the template-heavy option, Zapier's pick for ready-made forms, and it scores 4.3 from 1,841 reviews on Trustpilot in October 2026. Its free plan is tight: five forms, 100 submissions a month, 100 MB of uploads and 10 payment submissions, and once 500 submissions are stored it deletes the oldest to make room. Bronze is $34 a month billed yearly or $39 monthly, and Jotform charges in US dollars or euros.
On the UK side, Jotform can keep data on EU servers in Frankfurt, switched on in your account settings, and says its builder makes forms that meet WCAG 2.1 AA.
Who it suits: teams that want a template for every job and EU hosting without an enterprise contract.
Less suited to: anyone hoping to stay on the free plan for long.
Which form builder suits surveys, lead forms, quizzes, order forms and onboarding?
It depends on the job more than the brand.
Surveys: Tally for free and unlimited, or SmartSurvey, whose servers are in the UK, when answers must stay here. Its free plan takes 100 responses a month, and Advanced is £840 a year plus VAT.
Lead forms: Tally Pro, or

Quizzes: Tally and Fillout both score answers with calculations.

Payments and orders: Paperform takes payments on every plan through Stripe, Square, Braintree or PayPal and says it takes no cut; Pro is $49 a month billed yearly. Fillout also handles subscriptions, Tally only one-off payments.

What do UK GDPR, payments and accessibility mean for your choice?
Four things matter for a UK business: the contract, where answers are stored, payments and VAT, and accessibility.
The contract: a form builder is your processor under UK GDPR Article 28, so you need a data processing agreement; Tally's is accepted with its terms, with no signature needed. The ICO says consent has to be an opt-in and pre-ticked boxes don't count, and privacy information is due when you collect the data, in practice a link on the form itself.
Where answers are stored: Tally keeps form data in Europe, Typeform and
FilloutFilloutFillout is an online form builder for surveys, quizzes, order forms, bookings and signatures, with payments through Stripe and links to Airtable, Notion, HubSpot and 50+ other appsBuying guide · View store → in the US unless you're on their top plans, Jotform in the EU if you switch it on, and SmartSurvey in the UK. US hosting can be lawful: the UK-US data bridge has covered US firms in the UK Extension to the Data Privacy Framework since 12 October 2023, so it's worth asking a supplier whether it's signed up.
Payments in pounds: Typeform, Tally and Fillout all use Stripe, which takes pounds and charges 1.5% + 20p on standard UK cards and 3.15% + 20p on international ones in October 2026. Tally and Fillout say they add nothing on top.
VAT: Typeform adds VAT to UK subscriptions unless you give a VAT number, and when you sell through a form, AdFillout won't add VAT to your prices for you.
Accessibility: public sector websites must meet WCAG 2.2 AA, and the exemption for third-party content only covers what you didn't pay for or build, so a paid form on a council or school site has to meet it too. SmartSurvey claims WCAG 2.2 AA, Fillout's default Plain theme Admeets AAA contrast, Jotform claims 2.1 AA, and Tally says it has no official WCAG certification yet.
