What Anara does

Anara is an AI research workspace for students, academics and scientists: it searches over 300 million papers, reads your own PDFs and recordings, and answers with citations to the exact passage. There is a free plan with a daily usage limit. Paid plans start at $10 a month per seat for Plus, or $8 a month when billed yearly, which saves 20%. Anara says it offers no student discount.

  • A library of papers, notes and recordings

Upload PDFs, notes, slides, audio and video, or import by DOI, PMID, web address or YouTube link. Zotero and Mendeley libraries sync in, and a Chrome extension saves papers and pages as you browse.

  • Answers cited to the exact passage

The research agent answers from a single file, a folder, the whole library or the web, and links every claim to the highlighted passage it came from so it can be checked in one click.

  • Literature search

Searches more than 300 million academic papers alongside PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, bioRxiv, arXiv and other science databases, with filters and one-click saving to your library.

  • Extraction tables for reviews

Views put one paper on each row and one question in each column, with every cell cited. Tables export to CSV and Excel, and the docs include a workflow for screening and extraction in systematic reviews.

  • Write and cite

A note editor suggests citations from your library and exports to PDF, Word, Markdown, HTML and LaTeX in your chosen citation style, including uploaded CSL styles. A Word add-in brings the same sources into Word.

  • Deep Search and Model Council

On Max plans, Deep Search runs multi-step research tasks and Model Council puts one question to several AI models at once so their answers can be compared.

  • API and MCP server

A developer API covers paper search and citation resolution by DOI, arXiv, PubMed ID or title, and an MCP server lets AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT work with an Anara library.

Anara pros and cons

Pros

  • Answers link to the highlighted passage in the source, so claims can be checked in one click
  • The free plan refreshes daily and includes Zotero and Mendeley sync without a card
  • Extraction tables pull the same fields from every paper with a citation in each cell, and export to CSV and Excel
  • Searches over 300 million papers, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov alongside your own files
  • Yearly billing takes 20% off every paid plan, bringing Plus to $8 a month
  • SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, with zero data retention agreed with model providers

Cons

  • Free uploads are capped at 20MB or 120 pages per file, too small for long theses or books
  • Refunds are limited to 7 days from the first payment, and Trustpilot reviewers report refused refunds on renewals
  • Paid plans run on weekly allowances, and extra credits bought on the web expire after 12 months
  • Data is stored in the US with no EU-only hosting option
  • Priced in US dollars only, with no student discount
  • Trustpilot score of 2.4 out of 5 from 13 reviews, mostly about billing and support

Good for

  • PhD students and academics running literature reviews who need every claim traced to a page
  • Life sciences and medtech teams working from PubMed, trial registries and lab tools such as Benchling
  • Students writing a dissertation or thesis who can work within a daily free allowance
  • Research groups that want to share folders of papers and cited notes

Look elsewhere if

  • Organisations that need UK or EU data residency, since data is stored in the US
  • People wanting a general-purpose chatbot rather than a research library
  • Heavy users who want unlimited usage without weekly allowances or credits
  • Students hoping for an education discount, which Anara does not offer

What reviewers say about Anara

“great tool, really makes importing files so easy”

“Genuinely terrible. The models can’t seem to read uploaded documents properly, and can’t seem to follow basic instructions while writing as well.”

“They will only refund the very first payment you make to them”

What reviewers like

  • Citations that point to the exact passage, so answers can be checked against the paper
  • Time saved finding, explaining and citing papers for dissertations and theses
  • Quick importing of papers and web pages with the browser extension
  • Being able to ask questions across many papers at once

What reviewers complain about

  • Renewal charges that reviewers did not expect, and refunds refused after 7 days
  • Slow or unhelpful customer support when billing goes wrong

Anara: what to know before you pay

What is Anara and who is it for?

Anara is an AI workspace built for research, aimed at students writing theses, academics and scientists in industry. It used to be called Unriddle and took the Anara name in 2025.

You build a library from PDFs, notes, slides, recordings and YouTube links, or connect Zotero and Mendeley. Its agent then answers questions from your files, the web or both, and each claim links to the highlighted passage it came from. It can also search more than 300 million academic papers, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov, pull the same fields from every paper in a folder into a cited table, and draft notes that export to Word or LaTeX in your journal's citation style.

How much does Anara cost in the UK?

Anara prices its plans in US dollars only: Plus is $10 a month per seat, Pro $20, Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200, with Enterprise on request. The pricing page does not say whether UK VAT is added at checkout, so the final sterling charge depends on the exchange rate your card uses.

  • Free: a daily usage allowance, uploads up to 20MB or 120 pages, Zotero and Mendeley sync
  • Plus: a larger weekly allowance, 100MB or 600 pages per upload, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov
  • Pro: four times the Plus allowance, a choice of leading models, OCR for scanned papers, 300MB or 10,000 pages per upload
  • Max: five or twenty times the Pro allowance, Deep Search, Model Council and no upload limits

Usage is measured as AI work rather than a set number of messages. When a weekly allowance runs out you can wait for the reset or buy credits from $5, and credits bought on the web expire 12 months after purchase.

Is Anara worth paying for?

For anyone who reads a lot of papers and needs to show where each claim comes from, it can be, and the free plan is a fair test before paying. The passage-level citations and the cited extraction tables are what researchers single out, and they matter most for literature reviews and systematic reviews.

The case against is billing and support. Most of the 13 reviews on Trustpilot are one star, and several describe being charged for a renewal they did not want and then refused a refund, because Anara's refund window covers only 7 days from the first payment. A few reviewers also say the models misread uploaded documents. Checking the renewal date under Settings and cancelling well before it avoids the most common complaint.

Anara vs NotebookLM and ChatGPT: which is better for research?

Anara is narrower than a general chatbot: it keeps a permanent library, searches academic databases and ties answers to exact passages, which suits literature reviews more than open-ended chat. Google's NotebookLM is free and handles a small set of sources well, while ChatGPT covers far more ground but is not built around a citable library.

Among the apps covered here, Fabric is closer to a general AI workspace for notes and files, and Julius is the better fit when the job is analysing spreadsheets and data rather than reading papers. Anara publishes a benchmark table showing it ahead of NotebookLM, Perplexity, Claude and ChatGPT on answer accuracy across many documents, but those are the maker's own figures, not independent tests.

Is Anara safe to use with unpublished research?

Anara says it is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant, and that the AI model providers it uses keep no copy of prompts once a request is processed. Data is stored in the United States, mainly on Amazon Web Services, and EU-only hosting is not available, which may matter for UK universities or companies with data residency rules. Enterprise plans add single sign-on and a HIPAA agreement.

How do you get Anara cheaper?

Paying yearly is the saving Anara states: it takes 20% off, so Plus works out at $8 a month, Pro $16 and Max 5x $80 per seat. Anara says it does not offer a student discount and points students to the free plan instead, which refreshes its allowance every day.

Questions about Anara

Are there any Anara discount codes?

We don't currently list a confirmed discount code. That doesn't mean the store has no promotions; check its website for current prices.

Can I cancel Anara and get a refund?

Web subscriptions are cancelled under Settings, Billing, Cancel plan, which stops the next renewal but keeps your account and library. Anara offers a 7-day grace period from the date of your first payment, and purchases made in the iPhone app are refunded through Apple.

Which devices does Anara work on?

Anara runs in the browser and has a Mac app, an iPhone and iPad app (iOS 26 or later), a Chrome extension for saving papers and web pages, and a Microsoft Word add-in.

Is Anara the same as Unriddle?

Yes. Anara Labs launched the product as Unriddle and renamed it Anara in 2025, and the Chrome extension and older reviews may still use the Unriddle name.

Can Anara read scanned PDFs and recordings?

Text recognition for scanned documents and images is included from the Pro plan up. MP3, M4A, WAV and MP4 files and YouTube links are transcribed so you can ask questions about what was said.

What happens when I hit Anara's usage limit?

Work already running finishes, then new requests wait until your allowance resets: daily on the free plan, and 7 days after first use on paid plans. Paid workspaces can buy credits or upgrade to carry on.

Can I share an Anara library with my team?

Paid plans are billed per seat and let you add members and share folders. Plus allows 5 collaborators per folder, Pro 50 and Max unlimited.
