Enjoy the Wood: what to know before you buy

Choosing between 2D and 3D maps

The main structural difference is depth. The 3D maps are built from three layers, between 6 and 15 mm thick, while the 2D maps use a single layer of 5 to 6 mm. If you want the map to stand out from the wall, the 3D option is the one to look at. A flatter 2D map will suit a smaller room or a tighter budget.

Blank, Prime, Natural and Colour options

Blank maps have no names or borders, so they work as an empty canvas. Prime maps include country names and borders for states, provinces and territories. Natural maps are engraved rather than printed, which is why they do not show rivers or lakes. If you need water features on the map, the colour range is the better choice.

Sizing and lighting

Measure the wall first. The sizes run from M for small rooms, through L as the general option, XL as the most popular size, to XXL for a bold statement. LED versions need a power connection, so decide where the cable will run. A plug on the right or left side exits the lower part of the map, while a wire from the wall comes to the centre.

Night lights for fans

The Harry Potter night lights are a different buy. They use a birch plywood base with an acrylic insert that reveals a design when lit. Three light tones and a rechargeable battery make them practical for a bedroom or study. Check the size of 21 by 21 by 5 cm before you place one on a shelf.
