Firecrawl is a web data API that turns websites into clean Markdown or structured JSON for AI agents, chatbots and data pipelines, with endpoints to search, scrape, crawl and click through pages. It suits developers building AI products. A free plan gives 1,000 credits a month with no card; paid plans start at $16 a month billed annually, or $19 monthly, and verified students get 10,000 free credits.
Turns any URL into clean Markdown, structured JSON, a screenshot or plain text, waiting for JavaScript to load first. Web-hosted PDFs and Word documents are parsed too.
Searches the web and returns the full content of the results rather than just links, for feeding live information into agents and RAG pipelines. It costs two credits per ten results.
Crawl follows every accessible subpage of a site with controls for depth, page limits and paths, and respects robots.txt. Map lists every URL on a domain for one credit.
Opens a page in a cloud browser and clicks, types, scrolls and fills forms from plain-English prompts or code, so agents can reach content behind buttons and searches. It costs two credits per browser minute.
Describe the data you want and a schema, and the agent finds and extracts it across the web. Five runs a day are free, then it is billed in credits by the tokens it uses.
Checks pages or the wider web on a schedule from every five minutes to every week, separates meaningful changes from noise and sends results to a webhook.
An official MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, Windsurf and other agent tools use Firecrawl directly. There are Python and JavaScript SDKs and a command-line tool.
The main engine is open source under AGPL-3.0, with a guide to self-hosting it. The hosted service adds features the open-source build lacks.

Prices in US dollars. Local tax such as VAT is added by location; a valid tax ID can apply reverse charge in some regions. Annual billing saves 16.7% (20% on Scale). Verified students get 10,000 free credits. Paid plans top up in $5 steps up to a limit you set. Prices in US dollars, from AdFirecrawl's pricing page on 11 October 2026. “Excels in handling dynamic content, anti-bot mechanisms, and complex web actions”
For developers who need live web content inside an AI app, Firecrawl is worth paying for once the free 1,000 credits a month run out, because it handles proxies, JavaScript rendering and rate limits that would otherwise take days to build. For occasional scraping, the free plan may be all that is needed.
One API call turns a page into Markdown, JSON, a screenshot or plain text, and the same account can search the web, crawl a whole site, map every URL on a domain, or click and type on a page before reading it. There are SDKs for Python and JavaScript, a command-line tool and an official MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other agent tools. Firecrawl says more than 150,000 companies use it.
Firecrawl charges in US dollars: Hobby is $19 a month (or $16 billed annually), Standard $99 ($83), Growth $399 ($333) and Scale $749 ($599). Enterprise is priced on request.
The pricing page says local tax is calculated automatically by location, so UK buyers should expect VAT to be handled at checkout, and a valid tax ID can apply reverse charge in some regions. Each plan is a monthly pot of credits: a basic scrape or crawled page costs one credit, a search costs two credits per ten results, and asking for structured JSON adds four credits a page. When credits run out, paid plans top up in $5 steps up to a monthly limit you set; on Hobby that buys 1,000 extra credits, on Scale 5,000. Unused plan credits don't roll over, except for one month on Scale.
Both sell a REST API that scrapes pages into Markdown and crawls whole sites for AI agents, so the choice usually comes down to price per page at your volume and which extra tools you need. Firecrawl adds web search, page interaction, change monitoring and an open-source version that can be self-hosted.
Crawl4AI is a free open-source library for teams happy to run and maintain their own scraping, and Apify offers ready-made scrapers for specific sites. Firecrawl sits between them: a managed service with an open-source core under the AGPL-3.0 licence.
Not every one. Firecrawl claims 96% coverage of pages it tests, including JavaScript-heavy sites, but reviews note that sites with heavy anti-bot protection, such as large marketplaces and social networks, can still block it.
It respects robots.txt for its crawler, failed requests that return nothing are not charged, but a page that answers with an error such as 403 or 404 still costs a credit. Anyone scraping in the UK also needs to respect each site's terms and data protection law, which Firecrawl doesn't handle for you.
Firecrawl lists SOC 2 Type II, regular penetration testing, two-factor sign-in, signed webhooks and PII redaction on every plan, including Free.
A data processing agreement is countersigned on paid plans, which matters for UK GDPR. Zero data retention, SSO, IP restrictions and static egress IPs are Enterprise only. Teams that want data to stay on their own servers can self-host the open-source version, though the cloud service includes features it lacks.
Annual billing saves 16.7% on Hobby, Standard and Growth and 20% on Scale.

A web scraping API fetches pages and hands back clean data. For feeding an AI app, Firecrawl is the fullest toolkit and Context.dev costs less per page; for protected shops, ScrapingBee, Zyte and Bright Data do better. What 10,000 pages cost on each, and what UK law says.

The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month, which covers about 1,000 pages or 500 searches, with two concurrent browsers and low rate limits. No card is needed, but pay-as-you-go top-ups need a paid plan.
Monthly plan credits don't roll over on Hobby, Standard or Growth; Scale carries unused credits for one month. Credits you buy separately stay until used, but expire if you cancel the subscription.
Yes. The core is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence and Firecrawl publishes a self-hosting guide. The hosted cloud version includes extra features that the open-source build doesn't.
Firecrawl has an official MCP server for Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and other agent tools, plus a ChatGPT plugin. It also connects to LangChain, LlamaIndex, n8n, Zapier and Make.
Requests that fail with no result are not charged. A page that loads but returns an error status, such as 403 or 404, still costs one credit.
