Good Energy: what to know before you buy

The story

Good Energy was founded in 1999 by Juliet Davenport, when renewable electricity was still a fairly new idea in the UK. It has since grown from a small green supplier into a wider clean energy business, and it is based in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

The power

The company says all its electricity is renewable, bought directly from independent British generators through long-term agreements. It also says it matches customers’ usage with renewable generation in real time, rather than relying only on certificates. Those are Good Energy’s own claims, and its fuel mix and sustainability report are published on its site.

The tariffs

Its home tariffs include fixed and standard variable options, plus tariffs aimed at electric vehicle owners and heat pump households. Some are only for homes with a smart meter, so check what applies to you. There is also an export tariff for homes with solar panels that send spare power back to the grid. Prices are not listed here, because they change; they are set out on its tariff pages, and our energy comparison shows how suppliers compare for your region.

Beyond energy

Good Energy also installs solar panels, home batteries and EV chargers, and offers heat pumps through a partner. That makes it one place to look if you are planning to generate or store your own power as well as buy it. The company also publishes its fuel mix, so you can see where the electricity it supplies comes from before you decide.

Support

Existing customers get an online account and an app for meter readings, bills and payments. Its help hub covers moving home, smart meters, prepayment meters and extra support for customers who need it, and there is a Priority Services Register for people who qualify.

Switching

You start a switch by entering your postcode on its site to get a quote. Your new supplier handles the changeover with your old one. The company also runs a refer-a-friend scheme. Compare the full tariff details before you commit, because suppliers differ on exit fees, meter requirements and how prices are set.
