Le Chameau: what to know before you buy

The story

Le Chameau began in 1927 in Cherbourg, when bootmaker Claude Chamot set out to fix the boots farmers, hunters and fishermen complained about. He made his first prototypes from natural rubber and the word spread. The name, French for “the camel”, came in 1949 when he opened a workshop in Casablanca. In 1950 the brand introduced the Saint-Hubert, which it describes as the first rubber boot lined with leather.

The making

The brand says each pair is handmade by a single master bootmaker, or Maître bottier, who trains for around nine months. Its rubber comes from a Vietnamese plantation it has worked with since 2005, and it mixes it to a recipe based on Chamot’s original. Certain models, such as the Chasseur and Saint-Hubert, have aramid fibres melted into the rubber for extra protection.

The linings

Pick the lining first, as the brand’s guidance suggests. Neoprene is its warmest, rated by the brand to cold temperatures. Jersey is lightweight and moisture-wicking for warmer weather, and leather moulds to your foot for year-round comfort. The range includes zipped and adjustable styles, and soles built for muddy ground, farm work or everyday walking.

Delivery

Standard UK delivery is free, and a faster priority next-day option is available for the mainland UK on weekday orders placed before midday. The Scottish Highlands are excluded from next-day, and the Channel Islands have their own service. Check costs and timings at checkout.

Returns and warranty

You can return or exchange direct orders within the window shown on its returns page, using its online returns portal. Boots must be unworn: you can try them on at home, but once worn outside they count as used. Purchases from stockists go back to the stockist. Boots also come with a manufacturing warranty, which does not cover wear and tear or misuse.

What is the difference between jersey and neoprene lined wellies?

Neoprene is warmer and suits cold days. Jersey is lighter and wicks moisture, so it suits warmer weather. Le Chameau also makes leather-lined boots.

Can I try on Le Chameau boots at home?

Yes, you can try them on indoors. Once boots are worn outside they count as used and cannot be returned.

Does Le Chameau offer next-day delivery in the UK?

Yes, a priority next-day service covers mainland UK orders placed before midday on weekdays, excluding the Scottish Highlands. There is a charge, shown at checkout.

Does Le Chameau have a warranty?

Yes. Boots are covered against manufacturing defects, but not wear and tear, misuse or damage from heat, UV or chemicals. Keep your proof of purchase. It only covers items bought from its website and authorised retailers.

Can I return Le Chameau boots bought from a stockist?

No, not to Le Chameau. Returns on stockist purchases have to go back to the stockist you bought them from.
