London Centre for Book Arts: what to know before you buy

The story

The London Centre for Book Arts, or LCBA, sits in what was once the heart of east London's print industry. It describes itself as an artist-run, open-access studio for printing, binding and publishing, set up in October 2012.

It was started by Simon Goode and Ira Yonemura, who still run it with a small team. The studio says it is the first and only centre of its kind in the country, and that its facilities are open to everyone regardless of background or experience.

Workshops

Classes cover bookbinding, boxmaking, printmaking and publishing. Introductions to letterpress, Risograph and foil blocking sit alongside bookbinding days, boxmaking sessions and longer courses such as its Making Books School.

Each workshop has a fixed date and limited places, so popular ones sell out. The studio also publishes Making Books, a guide to hand-crafted books, and it runs tours for people who'd like to see the space before booking.

Studio passes

A studio pass gives independent access to the bindery and print and publishing studio, including letterpress, bookbinding, foil blocking and Risograph equipment you're qualified to use. Passes come as a set number of sessions, with an unlimited monthly option for experienced users.

Pass holders also get discounts on workshops and on books and materials from the shop.

The shop

The online shop sells books, editions and gifts, plus tools and materials for binding and printing. Gift vouchers are on offer for anyone who'd rather let a friend choose their own class.

Delivery and returns

Shop orders go out by Royal Mail, with Parcelforce or DHL for heavier items. Postage outside the mainland UK can vary, and customers abroad may owe import duties.

Shop items can be returned in saleable condition within the window on its refund policy, though you pay return postage. Sale items, gift vouchers and studio passes can't be returned. Workshop places have their own cancellation terms.
