The story
Má + Lin was started in London in 2021 by Yue, who grew up in Chongqing and worked as a fashion buyer in Paris and London. Seeing unused fabric end up shredded, she wanted a brand with no wasted materials and a supply chain you could trace.
The name is a nod to linen, which is called má in Chinese and lin in French, and to the French word malin, meaning clever.
The range
The core is the linen blouse, in cuts such as the cropped Frances and the longer Claudine, with colours, checks and stripes. There are also linen dresses, shorts and trousers, linen wool blazers, accessories, gift cards and monogramming. Collaborations with artists add embroidered pieces. Customers quoted on the site often mention the fabric quality and how the blouses wash.
The founder calls the aim making linen the new black, starting with French-style blouses for women of different ages and body shapes.
Materials and making
All the linen is certified European linen woven in Belgium by Libeco, a family-run mill. Garments are made in Portugal by a family-run manufacturer audited under SMETA. The brand publishes a supply chain map and lists its certifications, and says its packaging is recycled. It also says every item is traceable from the farm where the flax grows to the warehouse that dispatches it, and that finished garments are designed to biodegrade at the end of their life.
Pre-orders
Má + Lin avoids seasonal collections and uses pre-orders and limited stock to cut waste. That means some pieces take longer to arrive and some sizes sell out, so check each product page for its timing.
Delivery
UK delivery is by Royal Mail, with standard and express options, and the site offers free UK shipping above a spend threshold. Overseas orders are tracked and may attract customs charges.
Returns
You can return unworn items with tags attached within the legal period for a refund or exchange. Contact the shop first for a returns form, since unrequested returns aren't accepted. Return postage is at your cost, and UK exchanges are free.
