National Express

National Express runs scheduled coach services across the UK, along with airport transfers and event coaches. Its fares vary by how far ahead you book and whether you hold a Coachcard, so the cheapest option isn't always the simplest one for a given trip.

National Express: what to know before you buy

Choose the right ticket type

National Express sells several ticket formats. E-Tickets are emailed to you and can be shown on a phone or printed, while M-Tickets arrive by text message and are not available on European services. Check the format before you buy, especially if you plan to travel without a printer.

Check the open return rules

An open return is valid for three months from the outward date, but you must reserve a specific return service if you want a guaranteed seat. Standard returns are time-specific, so a missed connection may need a new ticket. If your plans are uncertain, a flexible fare is worth the extra cost.

Read the Coachcard and booking conditions

Coachcard discounts depend on a valid card number entered during booking, and some offers carry their own restrictions on dates and times. Booking through a My Account login can also avoid the standard booking fee shown on some fares, so compare the total before paying.

Check your ticket immediately

The conditions make checking your details your responsibility. Confirm the date, time and route on screen before paying and again when the confirmation arrives. Errors reported late may not be corrected, so raise any problem straight away.

Questions about National Express

Are there any National Express discount codes?

We don't currently list a confirmed discount code. That doesn't mean the store has no promotions; check its website for current prices.

Do I need to print my National Express ticket?

No. An E-Ticket can be shown to the driver on a smart device, and you can also print a copy if you prefer.

What happens if I miss my return coach?

Standard returns are tied to specific times, so you may need a new ticket. An open return is valid for three months but needs a reserved service for a guaranteed seat.

Who handles my order?

You complete your purchase with the retailer. For order changes, delivery questions or a refund, contact the seller shown on your order confirmation. Vouchernaut publishes shopping guides and offers; we don't process your purchase.

Shoppers' questions

Questions about National Express, answered by us and by readers who've shopped there.

  1. What is National Express's refund policy?

    Our answer

Refunds depend on the fare. A Fully Flexible fare can be cancelled for a full refund at least 24 hours before the original outward journey, and changed at no extra cost. A Standard fare can't be refunded or cancelled, but can be changed for a fee from £5 plus any excess fare. A Restricted fare can't be refunded or changed. Booking fees and some extras aren't refundable, and you need a registered My Account to manage a booking. If National Express cancels a service you've reserved before it starts, it either arranges other transport or refunds the fare.

  2. Does National Express have an app?

    Our answer

Yes. The National Express Coach app is free on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android, published by National Express. You can search and book coach journeys to UK towns, cities and airports, keep tickets in My Bookings to use offline or add them to your phone's wallet, re-book recent journeys and use the Coach Tracker to see timetables and follow your coach in real time.

  3. Does National Express do a student discount?

    Our answer

Yes. Students get 20% off coach travel Monday to Thursday and 10% off Friday to Sunday, on full-price Standard and Fully Flexible fares booked online. Verify with UNiDAYS, Student Beans or TOTUM through National Express's students page. It doesn't apply to Restricted or other promotional fares, events or booking fees, covers up to 4 passengers per booking and can't be combined with a Coachcard. Full-time students can instead buy a Young Persons Coachcard for £30 a year, which gives 1/3 off Standard and Fully Flexible fares.
