Nintendo eShop: what to know before you buy

What does Nintendo eShop sell?

Nintendo eShop sells digital games, add-ons and Nintendo Switch Online memberships for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It's on the consoles and on Nintendo's own website, and what you buy belongs to the Nintendo Account that bought it rather than to a cartridge.

How do you pay on Nintendo eShop?

The eShop takes payment from the account's balance or from a card or PayPal at checkout, and the balance can be topped up with a Nintendo eShop card. An eShop card works only on accounts set to the country or region it was sold for, and Nintendo can't exchange or refund one bought for the wrong region, so a UK account needs a UK card. The balance stays with the account's country too: it has to be spent before the country can be changed. The Nintendo eShop card page lists every UK card value with the lowest price at the shops compared here.

Can you get a refund from Nintendo eShop?

Usually not. Buying digital content on the eShop means agreeing that Nintendo supplies it straight away, which ends the right to cancel, and Nintendo says it can't refund or exchange a game bought by mistake or one you don't like. A pre-order is different: it can be cancelled from the Nintendo Account, under Funds and Payment Methods, until Nintendo takes the payment shortly before release.

How does Nintendo Switch Online work?

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo's subscription for online play, cloud saves and its library of classic games, sold as an individual or a family membership, with an Expansion Pack that adds more. A membership bought in the eShop renews automatically unless that's turned off in the Nintendo Account. Game shops sell membership codes for set lengths, which add that time to the account; the Switch Online codes page compares them.

Where else can you buy Nintendo credit and games?

UK game shops such as ShopTo sell eShop cards, Switch Online codes and Nintendo games, some for less than Nintendo's own price. The lists on this page show which of them cost less at the UK shops compared here, and each one opens a page comparing every shop's price for it. A code from a shop is redeemed in the eShop the same way as a card from a till.
