Royal Open College is a UK online course site selling self-paced CPD courses in care, safeguarding, food hygiene, teaching support and business. In October 2026 most courses cost £19.99, and a £49 yearly or £99 lifetime membership opened the whole library. The courses carry CPD hours rather than regulated qualifications, and certificates cost extra (£12.99 plus VAT for a PDF), so it suits people logging CPD or exploring a subject cheaply.

Short, self-paced online courses that end in an online test and an optional certificate. The catalogue runs from health and social care, safeguarding, teaching assistant and SEN courses to food hygiene, first aid, HR, accounting and hobby subjects such as beekeeping and ornithology. The college says it has more than 5,000 courses, though its team training page puts the figure at 3,000. The courses are bite-sized: the Health and Social Care Level 3 Diploma lists 100 lessons and about 6.5 hours of learning, assessed by a multiple-choice exam with a 60% pass mark and free retakes. Several course pages promise both lifetime access and 12 months' access, so the access period on a given course isn't entirely clear.
They are CPD courses, not Ofqual-regulated qualifications. The college says it is endorsed by the Quality Licence Scheme (QLS), accredited by CPD PSI, a member of The CPD Group, RoSPA and the Association of Healthcare Trainers, and listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers; one course page names the CPD Certification Service as its accreditor instead. The Quality Licence Scheme's own site says endorsed courses are not regulated by Ofqual and lead to a certificate of achievement, not a regulated qualification.
That matters because of the course titles. The Health and Social Care Level 3 Diploma here is not the regulated Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, which Ofqual's register lists at 496 guided learning hours, assessed through observation and a portfolio of evidence. The college's own FAQ says each employer decides whether its course meets their requirements. Likewise, the FAQ on its Functional Skills Maths Level 2 course describes it as different from qualification-based programmes, so it doesn't replace the regulated Functional Skills qualification.
The course fee is the small part. Most courses showed £19.99 in October 2026 beside a crossed-out £424.99 and a "today only" countdown, and archived copies of the same health and social care page from April and August 2025 show £29 against the same £424.99, so the low price is the normal one. Certificates are extra: £12.99 for a PDF and £24.99 for a printed copy (£37.98 for both), transcripts priced the same, with 20% VAT added at checkout and £5 UK postage for anything printed (£10 abroad). One course plus a PDF certificate therefore comes to at least £35.
The memberships change the sums for anyone taking several courses. The yearly plan (£49) opens every course but leaves certificates to pay for; Lifetime Prime Plus (£99) adds unlimited PDF certificates and transcripts, enrolment letters and a student ID card. From about three certificated courses, the lifetime plan costs less than buying them one at a time.
Cancellation is allowed within 14 days of purchase, as long as the course hasn't been substantially completed, and the terms let the college refuse a refund where significant content has been accessed or downloaded. Cancelling a membership stops future billing, with access normally running to the end of the paid period. The terms also say certificates don't guarantee employment, professional registration or regulatory approval unless the college states otherwise in writing.
On Trustpilot it scored 4.3 out of 5 from 58 reviews in October 2026, with 76% of them five-star. Reviewers mostly praise short, easy-to-follow lessons that fit around work and family. The critical reviews mention dry content read by AI voices, typos, missing modules and trouble downloading certificates, and one lifetime member reported being asked to pay for certificates (the college replied that lifetime members don't pay for digital ones). The "4.79 average from 2,700+ reviews" and the testimonials on the college's own pages don't name a source.
The codes and deals on this page are the main lever, and sitewide codes are a regular feature: the college's own pages carried a pop-up code and a "hot deals" countdown in October 2026. A gift course scheme gives one free course from a short list (forestry, plant nutrition, beekeeping, oceanology and similar), and the certificate order page has its own coupon box, advertising up to 30% off in October 2026. For more than two or three certificates, the £99 lifetime membership usually works out cheaper than paying per course, and employers can ask about team training plans.

Its courses are CPD-accredited. The college says it is endorsed by the Quality Licence Scheme, accredited by CPD PSI and a member of The CPD Group, and it is listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers. None of these makes a course an Ofqual-regulated qualification, and the Quality Licence Scheme says its endorsed courses are not regulated by Ofqual.
It is a CPD course of about 6.5 hours with a multiple-choice exam, not the regulated Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care that is assessed in a care workplace. The college's own FAQ says each employer decides whether it meets its requirements.
In October 2026 a PDF certificate cost £12.99 and a printed one £24.99, with 20% VAT added at checkout and £5 UK postage for printed copies. Lifetime Prime Plus members (£99) get unlimited PDF certificates.
Its terms allow cancellation within 14 days of purchase if the course hasn't been substantially completed. The college can refuse a refund where significant content has already been used.
4.3 out of 5 from 58 reviews in October 2026. Reviewers mostly praise flexible, easy-to-follow lessons; the complaints are about dry AI-voiced content, errors and downloading certificates.
