Choosing the right storage depth
Ottoman bases are offered in several internal depths, so the first decision is how much you need to store. The site lists 26cm for everyday bedding and pillows, 33cm for seasonal clothes, 39cm for suitcases and bulky items, and 50cm for maximum capacity. Deeper bases raise the finished height considerably, so check it against your mattress before committing.
Side lift or end lift
Side lift beds open from the long edge of the mattress, while end lift beds open from the foot. If your bed sits against a wall on one side, or the foot of the bed is tight against a door or wardrobe, the lift direction matters more than the fabric. Think about where you will stand when lifting.
Gas lift or electric lift
Gas lift ottomans suit most people who lift storage occasionally. Electric lift versions suit heavier mattresses and deeper bases, and remove the physical effort, but they need a power point nearby. Adjustable profiling beds are a different category: their motors sit inside the base, which usually rules out deep ottoman storage.
Keeping your headboard
If you already own a headboard, a base-only ottoman avoids buying a second one. Confirm the headboard fittings and leave enough clearance, particularly with a taller extra deep or jumbo base.
