Private dictation, read-aloud and transcription that run on your device
Yaps has a free plan and a 7-day free trial. Prices in US dollars as Yaps's pricing page showed them on 16 October 2026.
Yaps is a private AI toolkit from Yaps AI Ltd, a UK company founded in 2026. It types what you say, reads text aloud and transcribes audio on your own device, on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.
Hold one key (Fn on a Mac, Ctrl+Win on Windows, a double-tap of Ctrl on Linux) and speak. Yaps transcribes on-device, adds punctuation and types into the focused text field, detecting around 25 languages automatically.
Select text in any app and press a shortcut to hear it read in a natural voice, at anything from half to three times normal speed. Desktop has 18 voices and 31 languages, all processed locally.
A shortcut records a thought and saves the transcript as a Markdown note in your local vault, searchable by keyword and synced between mobile and desktop if you choose.
Transcribe imported audio and video, write a script and turn it into speech with one of 18 voices, and export WAV audio and SRT subtitles.
Translate notes, selected text and subtitle files on your computer, with 28 languages in the Standard pack and 53 in the Extended pack. Desktop only.
On Apple Silicon Macs, record a 10 to 20 second reference and have text read back in your own voice. The reference stays on your Mac.
A free Chrome extension that saves web pages, bookmarks and images into your Yaps vault once it is paired with the desktop app.

Prices are in US dollars. Students who verify a student email get 50% off their first year of yearly Pro. Referrals give you and a friend a free month each when they start Pro, stacking up to 12 months. Prices in US dollars, from Yaps's pricing page on 16 October 2026. Yaps may charge VAT on top, and prices can change.
Yaps puts several voice tools in one app. You hold a shortcut key, speak, and it types punctuated text into the app you are using, picking up the language as you talk. Select text anywhere and it reads it aloud in a natural voice, which helps when proofreading. Voice notes are saved as plain Markdown files you can search and edit, and the Studio editor transcribes audio and video files and exports subtitles. On desktop it also translates notes and subtitle files, and on Apple Silicon Macs it can read text back in a copy of your own voice. A free Chrome extension, Save to Yaps, saves web pages into the same notes.
Yaps is built around processing on your own device. Dictation, read-aloud and translation run on your computer or phone once their models are installed, so they keep working without an internet connection. Your account, billing, syncing and updates still go online.
The mobile app is free on Android, iPhone and iPad, with voice typing, voice notes and read-aloud, and it needs no account. Yaps Pro adds the desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux with unlimited dictation, transcription and captions, and it starts with a free trial. Yearly billing works out cheaper than monthly, and prices are shown in US dollars, so check the pricing page for current figures. Yaps says it does not refund a charge because you forgot to cancel a trial, so cancel in the app before the trial ends if you don't want to keep it. Teams can ask about volume licences.
Students can get a discount on their first year of yearly Pro once they verify a student email address. Yaps also runs a referral scheme: when a friend signs up with your code and starts Pro, you each get a free month. Any codes or deals from its affiliate programme are listed on this page.
It suits people who want dictation and read-aloud without sending their voice to the cloud, such as writers, students and anyone working with confidential material. Linux users have fewer dictation apps to choose from, and Yaps has a Linux app. If you only need voice typing on your phone, the free mobile app may be all you need.

Dictation software types what you say into any app. Most people should start with the free dictation in Mac, iPhone and Windows 11; Wispr Flow gives the most polished British text everywhere, Superwhisper keeps it offline, and Dragon still suits Windows users who want to pay once.
