The zoo
Whipsnade Zoo is a ZSL conservation zoo and part of a global conservation charity. The zoo says its teams work in many countries and that every visit helps fund work to restore habitats and protect wildlife. It describes itself as the largest zoo in the UK and is open daily. Opening times and any seasonal changes are listed on its site, so check before you set off. Its wider mission is to bring people and nature closer together.
The day
A visit takes in animals, habitats, play areas, daily talks and the Whipsnade Railway, with a visitor app for finding your way round. You can also book extra experiences for a closer look at the animals, and the zoo runs events through the year. Getting there, parking, food and accessibility are covered in its visitor information, which is worth a look if you are planning around young children or a mobility need.
Tickets
Prices depend on the day you visit. There are separate rates for off-peak weekdays, standard days, standard weekends and peak days, with adult, child and concession tickets. Children under three and ZSL members go in free. Concessions cover seniors, students with ID and disabled adults, and a disabled visitor can request a free carer ticket on arrival.
Saving
The zoo says its best prices are online, so booking ahead is cheaper than paying at the gate. Choosing a quieter day also helps. Each price is shown with and without an optional donation to ZSL. The zoo does not routinely run discounts, but it lists a few long-term arrangements, such as reduced-price tickets for people on Universal Credit.
Membership
Membership gives unlimited entry to both Whipsnade and London Zoo for a year, and members do not need to pre-book. It pays off if you expect to visit more than once, and gift memberships are available too.
