BEFORE YOU BUY
Before I'd buy anything here, I'd check what my own network charges where I'm going. Some UK plans still include Europe, many now charge a daily fee to use your allowance there, and outside Europe a pass or pay-as-you-go data costs a good deal more. For a week or more away, a travel eSIM usually costs less than any of them.
A travel eSIM is a data plan you download to your phone with a QR code or the seller's app, so there's no card to post or swap. It sits alongside your UK SIM, which stays on for calls and texts. Your phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked: on an iPhone, Settings > General > About shows "No SIM restrictions" next to Network Provider Lock when it is. Most travel eSIMs carry data only, so once you land, make the eSIM your data line and turn off data roaming on your UK line, or your network can still charge for data it uses.
Check when the plan's clock starts before you install it. Sim Local, Breeze eSIM and BambooSIM start it when the eSIM first connects at your destination, so you can set it up at home. WorldSIM starts it when you install, so leave that one until shortly before you fly. For Turkey, install before you go, since Turkey has blocked several eSIM sellers' websites and apps on its networks.
A physical SIM still suits a phone without eSIM. WorldSIM posts international SIM cards and sells pocket Wi-Fi routers, which share one connection between several devices, handy for a family or a laptop. And if your trip changes, read the refund terms before installing: most sellers only refund a plan that hasn't been activated or used.
QUICK ANSWERS
It will if your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a network. Apple says you need an iPhone XS, XR or later, Samsung lists the Galaxy S20 onwards, and Google says every Pixel from the Pixel 4 works with eSIM. Each shop here lists the phones it supports.
Yes. The eSIM sits alongside your UK SIM, so your number still gets calls and texts. Your network can charge for those abroad, and for data if data roaming stays on for the UK line, so turn that off once the eSIM is your data line.
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi at home, for plans that start when they first connect at your destination. A plan that starts on installation, like WorldSIM's, is best installed shortly before you fly. For Turkey, always install before you arrive.
Outside Europe, usually by a long way, since UK networks charge by the day or sell passes there. In Europe it's closer: some plans include roaming, and others charge a daily fee that a week's eSIM often undercuts. Check your own plan first.
Usually only if you haven't used the plan. Sim Local refunds an eSIM that hasn't been activated within 14 days of purchase, Breeze eSIM refunds one with no data used, and BambooSIM considers fixed-data eSIMs with no data used within 30 days. Read the terms before you install.
