BEFORE YOU BUY

What I'd check first

With gifts, the deadline matters as much as the price. Before I use a code, I check the delivery date and the cut-off for the day I need it, especially for flowers, personalised gifts and anything made to order.

Personalised items usually can't be returned, so check the spelling and the preview before you pay. For jewellery, look at the returns window, the warranty and whether the item comes boxed.

Experience days and gift cards make easy presents, but read the expiry date and how booking works, so the person you're giving it to actually gets to use it.

QUICK ANSWERS

Gifts & Occasions questions

Can I return a personalised gift?

Usually not, unless it arrives faulty or with a mistake the retailer made. Check your personalisation carefully before you order.

What should I check before buying an experience day?

Check the expiry date, where and when it can be booked, and whether it can be exchanged or extended if plans change.

LIFEChristmas gifts for nerdy adultsA nerdy gift is a present built around a hobby someone takes seriously, from model making to PC gaming. The best ones are a small project they can finish, an experience you've agreed together, or the one upgrade they've asked for.LIFEChristmas gifts for mum who says she wants nothingBuying Christmas presents for a mum who says she wants nothing? I'd choose between a treat she'd never buy herself and something she'll use up. Picks from UK shops from about £10 to £60, with personalised lead times, sending from afar, clubbing together, and gifts for nan, including in a care home.LIFEChoosing an advent calendar for 2026Twenty-four doors can hold £10 of chocolate or a £245 box of skincare. I compare what's inside each kind of advent calendar against its price, read the beauty shops' worth figures as their own sums, and check which ones ship in time for 1 December.LIFEChristmas gifts for dad that he'll actually useBuying for a dad who says he wants nothing? I'd start from what he already does, his food, his drink, his garden or his sport, and pick something he'll use up or go and do. Picks from UK shops from a few pounds to about £60, with what personalised gifts and Christmas delivery need.LIFEChristmas hampers judged by what's insideA hamper's price pays for the basket, the packing and the delivery as well as the food. Here's how I'd read the contents list, match it to the person opening it, and get it there with its dates intact.LIFESecret Santa gifts for someone you barely knowSecret Santa is hardest when you've drawn a colleague you barely know and the limit is £10. I'd buy something they can eat or use up, keep it inside the limit once delivery is added, and save the jokes and personalised gifts for people you know well.
