Our note

On 26 October 2026, Retail Times reported Updraft's comparison: a 640g bag of Haribo Trick or Treat mini bags was £3 at Asda, against around £2.17 in 2021. A bowl by the door has a cost, even before any other Halloween spending. I can see why someone would leave sweets off the shopping list, especially if they do not celebrate the occasion themselves.

In Nationwide's 2026 survey of 2,001 UK adults, 28% planned to stock up on sweets for trick-or-treaters, while 26% said they did not celebrate Halloween at all. A separate 2026 Finder survey found that 66% planned to spend £20 or less, or nothing, on Halloween. There is another side for people who do take part: in Savvy's 2026 survey of UK shoppers, giving treats was the most popular activity among Halloween participants, planned by 63% of that group. Those surveys ask different questions, so I would not treat the percentages as opposing votes. It comes down to whether your household takes part and what you are comfortable spending on visitors.
