Is Kindle Unlimited, now Kindle+, worth it?

Our note
On 22 October, Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited as Kindle+. The UK fee remains £9.49 a month. I would check the titles I actually want to read before judging whether that monthly fee earns its place.
Amazon says members can borrow from millions of ebooks and hundreds of magazines, hold up to 20 titles at once and keep them without a due date. It works on a Kindle or through the free Kindle app on a phone, tablet or computer. Its UK page mentions audiobooks, but T3 reported on 23 October that the new audiobook perk was available in the US and excluded in the UK for now.
The useful comparison is with books you would otherwise buy. A single monthly read covers the fee only if buying it would cost more than £9.49. The catalogue is separate from the full Kindle store, so a favourite author may be missing. Borrowed titles go when the membership ends after the next billing date; fees already paid are not refunded.
