Our note

On 10 October, the Daily Mirror reported a survey for Park Christmas Savings: the average household expected Christmas to cost £1,502, and more than a third planned to borrow to pay for it. I can see why a family might discuss whether to exchange presents.

In YouGov's 2025 Christmas survey, 15% of British adults said they would rather receive no presents at all. The full 2025 tables also show 44% preferred a surprise and 32% preferred to be asked what they wanted. People in the survey wanted different things.

Money was part of that older picture too. The median estimate for all presents was £300, and 33% said they were at least fairly worried about Christmas's effect on their finances, rising to 42% in households with incomes under £30,000. I would put the savings beside what the exchange means to the people involved. A family Secret Santa keeps a present in the picture while limiting what each person buys.
