Sim Local: what to know before you buy
What does Sim Local sell?
Sim Local sells prepaid travel eSIM plans on its website and app, from single-country plans to regional and global ones. Some plans are data only and others include calls and texts with a phone number, as each plan's details show. Sim Local says it works with partner networks, and the carrier depends on the destination. Physical SIM cards aren't posted: they're sold at its airport shops and from its vending machines. WorldSIM and BambooSIM also sell travel eSIMs, among other mobile and SIM-only shops.
Will a Sim Local eSIM work on my phone?
It will if the phone or tablet has built-in eSIM support and isn't locked to a network. Sim Local publishes a list of compatible devices, and its help centre advises against eSIM adaptors. A locked phone has to be unlocked by its network, and Sim Local's unlocking guide shows how to check. Checkout asks buyers to confirm the device is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Each eSIM downloads once onto one device, so it usually can't be moved to another phone.
How do you install and activate it?
Sim Local emails the QR code and download codes after payment, and the plan also appears under My eSIM in its app, with a one-click download on supported phones. It can also be added in the phone's settings from the QR code or the typed codes. Its setup guide says to turn on data roaming for the eSIM and turn off automatic data switching, which can run up roaming charges on the home SIM. Most plans start working on arrival, but some count their validity from installation, so the help centre suggests installing shortly before travelling.
Can you keep your own number and top up?
The home SIM can stay on alongside the eSIM in a dual-SIM phone, so calls to the usual number still arrive, at the home network's roaming rates. Sim Local can't move an existing number onto its eSIMs, but WhatsApp keeps its usual number over the eSIM's data. Data-only plans have no number of their own. Top-ups depend on the network: Smartroam plans take add-ons through My eSIM, while plans on some partner networks are topped up through that network. Unused data expires with the plan.
How do refunds and discount codes work?
An eSIM that hasn't been activated can be refunded in full within 14 days of purchase by emailing Sim Local with the order number. Once activated it counts as used and isn't refundable unless a technical fault on Sim Local's or the network's side stopped it working, and the terms rule out refunds where the setup instructions weren't followed. A code goes in the "Add a discount code" box at checkout. Any live codes from Sim Local's programme are listed on this page with their own terms.

Sim Local says it's based in Dublin and London. Irish entrepreneur Killian Whelan founded it in 2011 with a shop at Dublin Airport, and its parent company, Sim Local (Ireland) Limited, is registered in Dublin.
Does a Sim Local eSIM come with a phone number?
Some plans do. Sim Local says plans with calls and texts come with a local or regional number, while data-only plans have no number, so calls go through apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Can I get a refund on a Sim Local eSIM?
Yes, if it hasn't been activated: its refund policy gives a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Once activated it counts as used and isn't refundable, unless a technical fault on Sim Local's or the network's side stopped it working.
Does Sim Local deliver physical SIM cards?
No. Its help centre says physical SIM cards are sold at its airport shops, vending machines and partner stores, and online orders are eSIMs.
Can I use WhatsApp with a Sim Local eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp runs over the eSIM's data and keeps its usual number, as long as the account isn't deleted or re-registered when switching SIMs.
