Lebara: what to know before you buy

What is Lebara?

Lebara sells SIM cards for a phone you already own, on SIM-only and pay-as-you-go plans rather than handset contracts. It began in London in 2001 selling international calling cards, and calling abroad has stayed at the centre of what it sells. In the UK it’s a virtual network, using another operator’s masts: Vodafone has hosted Lebara Mobile since its UK launch in 2007, so its coverage is Vodafone’s, and Vodafone opened its 5G service to Lebara customers in 2021.

Who does Lebara suit?

It suits someone whose phone is paid off or bought outright and who wants a plan sized to how they use it, especially anyone who rings family or friends in other countries. Plans differ in data, UK minutes and texts, and international minutes, so it’s worth checking that the countries you call are covered before ordering. Buying a handset outright and adding a SIM-only plan isn’t always the cheaper route, and our guide to switching from iPhone to Android adds up when it beats a contract.

How do Lebara’s codes work?

Each code here says who it’s for and what it takes off. Where a discount covers only the first months of a plan, the plan moves to its usual price afterwards, so the figure worth comparing is the total over the time you expect to keep it, with any price rise in its terms included. If Vodafone’s signal is weak where you live, Chattr runs on O2’s network, and 1pMobile sells pay-as-you-go and SIM-only plans without long contracts.

Can I keep my number?

Yes. Any UK network gives you a PAC code when you text PAC to 65075 from the phone you’re leaving, and your new provider uses that code to move the number across. A PAC is valid for 30 days, and the new provider must complete the switch within one working day.

How do I manage a Lebara plan?

Lebara’s MyLebara app shows the balance and allowance left on a plan and its recent activity, takes top-ups by debit or credit card or PayPal, and has online support. Checking what you actually use there is a quick way to tell whether a plan’s allowance fits.

Questions about Lebara

Are there any Lebara discount codes?

We currently list 3 discount codes. Check each offer's terms, country and expiry date before using it. The retailer confirms eligibility at checkout.

What network does Lebara use?

Vodafone’s. Lebara Mobile is a virtual network that Vodafone has hosted since its UK launch in 2007, so its coverage follows Vodafone’s.

Does Lebara have 5G?

Vodafone opened its 5G service to Lebara customers in 2021. Using it takes a 5G phone in an area with Vodafone 5G, so it’s worth checking that the plan you pick includes it.

Can I keep my number if I move to Lebara?

Yes. Texting PAC to 65075 from the phone you’re leaving gets a PAC code, valid for 30 days, which Lebara uses to move the number across.

Is Lebara a contract?

No handset comes with it: Lebara sells SIM-only and pay-as-you-go plans for a phone you already own. Each plan’s terms set out how long it runs and how to leave.

How do I check my Lebara balance?

The MyLebara app shows the balance and allowance left on your plan and your recent activity, and it takes top-ups by card or PayPal.

Who handles my order?

You complete your purchase with the retailer. For order changes, delivery questions or a refund, contact the seller shown on your order confirmation. Vouchernaut publishes shopping guides and offers; we don't process your purchase.

Shoppers' questions

Questions about Lebara, answered by us and by readers who've shopped there.

  1. Does Lebara do a student discount?

    Our answer

Yes, through Student Beans. Lebara's student offers page points students to Student Beans, where verified students who are new Lebara customers can get an introductory discount on its SIM-only plans. Lebara says its plans need no credit check and its 30-day plans can be changed or cancelled at any time, and its student page says there are no annual price increases on its student deals for data, UK minutes and UK texts.

  2. What is Lebara Rewards?

    Our answer

Lebara Rewards is a benefits website, linked from the Rewards menu on Lebara's site and managed and run by Propello Cloud. Members aged 18 or over register with an email address and can then claim discounts and offers from other brands, buy e-gift cards at a discount, enter prize draws and claim free giveaways. E-gift cards can only be used with the brand chosen and usually arrive by email within an hour.

  3. Do Lebara plans include international calls?

    Our answer

Yes. Lebara says all its SIM-only plans include international calls to over 50 countries at no extra cost, with standard mobile and landline calls counted in the plan's international minutes allowance. The allowance depends on the plan: plans on its site include 100 or 500 international minutes, and its rates page says some have unlimited international calling. Once the allowance is used up, or on pay-as-you-go, calls are charged at its standard PAYG rates from PAYG credit, and its rates page has a tool showing the price to each country. International premium numbers cost the country's rate plus 60p a minute.

  4. Does Lebara have an app?

    Our answer

Yes. MyLebara is Lebara's free account app, on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android. Its store listings say it lets customers top up with a credit or debit card or PayPal, check their balance and allowance, view recent activity and get online support. The app is free, though data charges may apply, and it is available in the UK as well as France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain.

  • Breeze eSIM

Breeze eSIM sells data-only travel eSIMs for single countries, regions and global trips, suited to travellers with an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone who want to keep their usual number for calls. Any live codes and deals are listed here and entered at its checkout.

  • Chattr

This is Chattr, a Salford-based SIM-only mobile provider that resells O2 SIMs on rolling monthly plans with no credit check. You get O2 coverage and a plan you can leave whenever you like, without a long contract.

  • Sim Local

Sim Local is an Irish travel SIM company selling eSIM plans online and in its app, and SIM cards at its airport shops, for travellers avoiding roaming charges abroad. Any live codes are listed here and entered at its checkout.

  • BambooSIM

  • Ecotalk

Ecotalk is a SIM-only mobile network that sends its profits towards nature restoration in Britain rather than to shareholders. It runs on a major UK network, and its plans are on rolling monthly terms. Here is what it offers, who it suits, and what to check before switching.

  • Lyca Mobile

Lyca Mobile is a mobile network operator that runs as a virtual network on top of other providers' infrastructure. It has been operating since 2006 and describes itself as a major provider of SIM-only plans with a focus on high data allowances. For UK shoppers comparing SIM-only deals, it is one of the established names worth checking.

  • Metrofone

Metrofone sells mobile phones in the UK and Northern Ireland, so the first decision is usually the handset itself. Before looking at any monthly figure, check the model, storage size and the network arrangement attached to it. Those three things shape what you actually pay across the agreement.
