What I'd check first
Modelling is all about scale, so I'd check that first. Model railway kits and scenery come in standard scales such as 00/H0 and N, and a lovely building in the wrong scale is no use to your layout. Metcalfe's pre-cut card kits are a good example of a British maker that sells direct and lists the scale on every product.
If you're new to it, start with a small, simple kit and the basic tools (a sharp knife, a cutting mat and the right glue) rather than a big scene. It's cheaper, and you'll know within an evening whether it's for you.
