Audible

Audible is a subscription audiobook service covering bestsellers, new releases, its own Originals and podcasts. The two membership levels differ mainly in how you pick titles each month, so the right choice depends on how many audiobooks you expect to get through.

Audible: what to know before you buy

Choosing between Standard and Premium

The main decision is how many titles you want each month. Standard lets you select one audiobook a month from the full collection, and you can listen to your selections for as long as you remain a member. Premium gives you a monthly credit to buy any title you like, and that title is yours to keep even if you cancel. If you want more choice and listen heavily, Premium is the stronger fit.

Understanding what you keep

Audiobooks bought with cash or credits stay in your library after you cancel. Titles from the Plus Catalogue and any Standard selections are different, and you lose access to these once your membership ends. If you want a permanent collection, buying titles outright or using credits is the safer route.

Using credits and missed months

Premium credits roll over from month to month until they expire or your membership is cancelled, so unused credits are not lost straight away. Standard selections do not roll over, so a month without a selection is a month of allowance gone. Check how many credits you have banked before deciding whether to add more.

Making the most of the free trial

Both plans include a 30-day free period for new members, and during this time you get the same benefits as a paying member. Once the trial ends, a monthly subscription fee applies, so note your start date and check when renewal falls. You can cancel monthly, which keeps the commitment short.

HarperCollins UK is the online shop of a major book publisher, stocking fiction, non-fiction, classics and new releases. Because the range spans genres, editions and formats, the most useful starting point is knowing what you want to read and how you want to read it. Checking the exact title and format before ordering saves you from the wrong edition.

  • Ordnance Survey

Ordnance Survey's own shop is the place to buy official UK paper maps and walking guidebooks. The range is built around two map series, a set of guidebooks for walkers, and historical and gift options. Here is how to pick between them.

  • Scholastic

Scholastic UK is a children's publisher selling its own titles online, alongside book clubs, classroom book fairs and education resources. The range suits parents and grandparents buying for young readers, and teachers organising group orders for a class or school.

  • Anthem Publishing

Anthem Publishing is a magazine publisher rather than a product retailer, and its shop covers titles spanning music, vegan food, mindfulness and colouring. The store is where you subscribe to a favourite title or buy a single issue, with digital versions available for some magazines but not all.
