Winter city breaks have a problem. It gets dark at about half four, it's freezing, and after one museum you're basically just looking for somewhere warm to sit. Amsterdam Light Festival fixes that, because the whole point of it happens after dark. The art takes over the city at night and leaves your days free for everything else.
The dates you need: Edition 16 is scheduled from 25 November 2027 to 16 January 2028. If you'd rather go earlier in the year, Edition 15 opened in November 2026 and keeps going until 17 January 2027.
Why I think it's worth the trip
What I like is watching a city you think you know turn into something else. Bridges, canal edges and the old docklands become part of the artworks, and the reflections on the water stretch each piece way beyond its actual size. If you like public art but you'd rather spend an evening wandering through a city than shuffling through another gallery, this is your thing.
Walk it or get on a boat?
I'd walk. You can stop when you want, speed up when you're cold, and duck into somewhere for food or a drink halfway round. A boat makes more sense if the view from water level is what you're after, if mobility or the cold makes a long walk grim, or if you just like knowing where you start and finish. Don't assume the cruise is the "full" version, though. What you can see, the commentary, the type of boat and the route can all be different.
I wouldn't decide until the Edition 16 route is out. Some pieces work better from the water. Others are better when you can stop, loop back or nip off to warm up.
That's the official film from the 2025–26 edition, and it's a decent way to get a feel for the scale, the reflections and the late-night mood. Just remember the artworks change every edition, so don't fall in love with one piece.
How I'd spend the weekend
Friday: arrive, eat near the hotel and do a short canal walk. Don't try to see the whole festival on night one.
Saturday: use the daylight for one museum or one neighbourhood, have a rest before it gets dark, then give the evening to the light route.
Sunday: a market, a cinema or a walk round the eastern docks before you head home.
The pacing really matters in winter. A museum marathon followed by several cold kilometres after dark sounds lovely on paper and turns into an endurance test in practice. One big thing in the daytime is plenty.

When should I book?
If you're going in late November or December, grab a well-connected room as soon as the dates work for you, then pick a cruise once Edition 16 puts out its route and sailing times. If it's early January 2027 you're after, you're booking for Edition 15, which closes on 17 January.

One night will cover the light route. Two is a much better trip, though, because you get a full day in Amsterdam and you're not trying to squeeze travelling and the festival into the same evening.
Where should I stay?
Near a straightforward metro or tram link. I wouldn't pay extra just for a canal-ring address. The two options here have plenty of character and make it easy to get to the route in the evening.
