Every co-op group chat has the same conversation. Someone posts a trailer, three people reply "we HAVE to play this", and then nobody can agree whether to buy it on Steam, Xbox or PlayStation. State of Decay 3 is going to start that argument in a lot of chats.

Here's what we know. It's coming to Steam, Windows, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2027. You can play it solo, or in a shared world with up to four people. There's no exact date, no PC requirements and no edition prices yet.

The best source right now is Undead Labs' gameplay interview, because it actually explains how the shared world, settlements, combat and playtests are meant to work.

Is that trailer real gameplay?

According to creative director Kevin Patzelt, yes: the 2026 trailer is game capture, not CGI, and the normal over-the-shoulder bits use the real gameplay camera. That's encouraging. It's still a hand-picked demo, though, not someone independently putting the full build through its paces.

The bits I'd pay attention to: much bigger settlements, weapon crafting, open-world traversal, and Plague Nests shown as nasty, dungeon-like spaces you have to fight through. You also see several survivors working together, which fits everything they've said about the shared world.

Can I play it on my own?

Yes. The developer says it supports solo play as well as shared-world co-op for up to four. What we don't know yet is how progression, settlement ownership and mission decisions work when someone hosts and friends drop in.

I wouldn't assume your group can all run one settlement with equal say until there's a written co-op FAQ. Cross-platform invites, who owns the save, difficulty scaling and whether drop-in progress sticks all decide whether buying four copies is a good idea.

What's different from State of Decay 2?

The core is the same: keep a community alive, scavenge, build up your base, and live with consequences that don't go away. It's all just bigger and more detailed. Plague Nests are being built as proper places rather than quick objectives, weapon crafting is more front and centre, and co-op is pitched as a shared world rather than a bolt-on to the solo game.

If you're on the fence, State of Decay 2 is still the best test. Grab it cheap or play it on Game Pass and see whether juggling survivors, managing supplies and losing people you've grown attached to gives you the kind of stress you enjoy. Nicer graphics won't change whether you like community management.

How do I get into the playtest?

Undead Labs links to an official State of Decay 3 playtest waitlist, and says alpha and beta access will open up over time. Getting on the list doesn't guarantee you'll be picked, and it doesn't come with a release date or a free copy.

Only sign up through the developer's official playtest page. If some "invite" slides into your DMs asking you to install a file or hand over your login, it's a scam. Real playtests can come with confidentiality terms too, so read them before you post clips or impressions anywhere.

Game Pass or Steam?

For a group that wants to try it before four people buy it outright, Xbox Game PassXbox Game PassMicrosoft's game subscription for Xbox and PC, with catalogue access tied to an active plan rather than permanent ownership.Buying guide · View store → is the sensible route. The Windows and Xbox versions also support Xbox Play Anywhere, which is handy if your household flits between console and PC.

SteamSteamValve's PC game storefront and library, including direct game purchases, demos and Steam hardware pages.Buying guide · View store → makes more sense if your group already lives on Steam, you want it in your library for good, or you care about Steam's community features. Just don't assume every PC version shares progress, achievements or mod support until the publisher says so.

For four players, work out the real cost for the whole group: four copies, four subscriptions, or whatever mix the cross-play rules allow. The cheapest option for one person can be the wrong one for the group if invites and saves don't connect.

What PC details should I wait for?

It's built on Unreal Engine 5, but that tells you nothing about what it'll need. Wait for CPU, GPU, memory, storage and target-performance details on the store page, then for independent testing of traversal, shader compilation and busy settlements.

Big open worlds can hammer your CPU, storage and memory as much as your graphics card. So if it does struggle, don't assume the fix is a new GPU.

What does the co-op FAQ need to answer before four of you buy it?

"Up to four players" tells you how many people can join. It doesn't tell you how the group actually works. State of Decay is all about communities, scarce resources and consequences, so the hosting rules affect what every extra copy is worth.

Before you organise a group purchase, I'd want clear answers to these:

Co-op questionWhy it changes the purchase
Who owns the settlement save?Visitors may lose access when the host is absent
What progress returns to a visitor's world?Loot, characters and missions may transfer differently
Is cross-play available across Steam, Windows, Xbox and PlayStation?A cheap copy is useless if it cannot join the group
Can difficulty and accessibility settings differ per player? One shared setting may not suit everyone
How does permadeath work for visitors?A lost character may belong to the guest, host or session
Are mods allowed in shared sessions?Storefront and anti-cheat rules can divide a PC group

Don't fill in the blanks with how State of Decay 2 did it. A sequel that's being sold as a shared world might have changed the host-and-guest setup on purpose.

When would an upgraded edition be worth it?

For a co-op survival game, I'd pay more for a playable expansion or an extra campaign region long before I'd pay for weapon skins. Early access is worth less when four people have to line up their diaries anyway, and bonus supply packs can take the edge off the early resource scramble that makes the game what it is.

Price any upgrade across the whole group. A £15 premium looks fine for one person, but it's £60 across four copies. If it turns out only the host needs a map expansion, wait for the publisher to confirm that before everyone pays for it.

Where should I buy it?

Steam and the Microsoft ecosystem are both confirmed. Authorised key shops might list it later, but any retailer should clearly state the activation platform, region, edition and delivery terms.

When orders open, check our UK PC game retailer guide, then compare the exact platform, edition, UK activation and delivery terms before you pick a shop.

Should I preorder State of Decay 3?

Not yet. There's no exact date, no requirements and no full co-op policy to judge it on. Join the official waitlist, wishlist it, and use State of Decay 2 to work out whether this kind of community survival is actually your thing.

When orders do open, weigh Game Pass against owning it, and sort the platform question out with your group before anyone buys anything. Our 2027 PC release calendar will track the date and whatever else is launching around it.
