Steam: what to know before you buy
What does buying on Steam mean for a refund?
Buying a game or software from the Steam store puts it in the Steam account library and brings the purchase under Steam's refund policy. Steam offers a refund for any reason when the request is made within fourteen days of purchase and the game has been played for less than two hours. Steam will also consider requests outside those limits.
For a pre-purchase that cannot be played before release, a refund can be requested any time before release. The usual fourteen-day and two-hour limits then start on the release date. Early Access and Advance Access playtime counts towards the two-hour limit. Some third-party DLC is non-refundable, and Steam marks those exceptions on the store page before purchase.
What changes if the game is bought as a Steam key?
A Steam key bought from another shop unlocks a game in the Steam library, but the purchase was made outside Steam. Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam wallet cards, so Steam's refund policy is not the route for a key bought elsewhere.
The UK guide to PC games and keys explains why a key's source matters: it determines the launcher, region and refund route. A game appearing in the Steam library after activation does not make the outside purchase refundable by Valve. The shop or seller's terms matter if there is a problem with the key.
What kind of seller is behind a Steam key?
Steam keys are sold by stores supplied by publishers, key shops that buy stock elsewhere, and marketplaces with individual sellers. The guide to game key sites explains these different arrangements. On a marketplace, the site taking payment is not the seller, and the buyer relies on an individual seller's terms. That distinction matters when a key fails, because the type of seller changes who owes the buyer what. CJS CD Keys is an example of a key shop that buys stock elsewhere.

The prices show what the UK game shops Vouchernaut checks charge for Steam games, with any fee their feeds provide. Each item opens a page comparing every shop's price for that game. Commission does not change what is listed or its order. A shopper comparing those prices can also consider whether the purchase is made on Steam or through another seller, since that choice determines the refund route.

Can I get a refund on a game I've played for a while?
Steam's standard refund route covers games played for less than two hours and requested within two weeks of purchase. Outside those limits you can still ask, and Steam will review the request, but approval is not guaranteed.
Are Steam refunds available for keys bought elsewhere?
No. Steam says it cannot provide refunds for purchases made outside Steam, such as CD keys or Steam wallet cards bought from third parties.
