Good news for anyone who's spent the last few years watching console players spoil the remake trilogy while waiting for a PC port: Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on PC on 8 April 2027, the same day as the consoles. Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC are all announced. No delay, no "PC version later", no dodging spoilers for a year.
What is Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
It's the third and last part of Square Enix's remake of Final Fantasy VII, the 1997 role-playing game. Instead of one remaster, the remake retells the story across three big games, with what Square Enix calls a hybrid combat system: Remake Intergrade, then Rebirth, and now Revelation, in which Cloud Strife and his friends take to the skies in the airship Highwind to stop Sephiroth and Meteor. Square Enix's release-date announcement confirms the date, the storefronts and the digital editions.
Why is Revelation a big deal?
It closes a project Square Enix calls one of the most ambitious in video game history, and the same announcement counts over 140 perfect review scores for the first two parts between them. In the UK, "ff7 revelation" is searched about 1,600 times a month and "final fantasy 7 remake" about 5,400 (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026).
Why should you care before you pre-order?
Because Revelation isn't a place to start. It finishes a story told across two long earlier games, the pricier editions are partly a pre-order for two story expansions planned for winter 2027 to spring 2028, and the final PC requirements aren't out yet. Nothing yet says your progress, levels or gear carry over from the earlier games either. So the real question isn't when; it's whether to buy the standard edition, pay now for expansions that come later, or spend the next few months actually finishing Remake and Rebirth. My honest answer for a lot of people is that last one.

What's in the trailer?
The reveal is all about the meteor on its way, the showdown with Sephiroth and the party travelling across a much bigger world. You see airborne travel and the whole gang together, which is enough to make anyone who played the 1997 original sit up. But it's cut so fast that you can't really tell where the open world ends or what the final combat options look like.
The gameplay material that came with it confirms a lot more: the Highwind as a free-flying airship, parachute and grappling-hook traversal, Cid and Vincent as playable characters, party swapping, and FITS, which are job-style outfits that change your abilities. I love the sound of all of that. It's still footage the publisher picked, though, not a test of how it'll run on your PC.
Do I need to play Remake and Rebirth first?
Yes, if you want this version of the story to make any sense. Revelation wraps up the remake trilogy. It doesn't retell Final Fantasy VII from the top.
On PC, the order is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, then Revelation. The 1997 original tells a different version of the whole story and is great context, but it won't prepare you for the character and timeline changes the remakes make.
Catching up shouldn't turn into a chore. The digital Trilogy Edition includes Remake Intergrade, Rebirth and Revelation, but it's only worth it if you want all three and have the time to play the first two. Honestly, waiting for a sale might be more fun than cramming two enormous games before April.
Will my old saves carry over?
Sort of. Square Enix says save data for Remake Intergrade and Rebirth on the same PC platform unlocks bonuses in Revelation. Remake data gets you Chocobo & Moogle materia and weapon skins; Rebirth data gets you Phoenix materia and more weapon skins. Those are goodies, not a transfer. Nothing says your story choices, levels, equipment or completion carry across.
Old saves and installs are worth keeping if it's easy to. Picking a store purely in the hope of a transfer nobody's announced is another matter: I'd wait until Square Enix spells out which games, platforms and account regions are supported.

Having the whole trilogy in one library is genuinely nice, but it's tidiness, not a technical requirement.

What will it need to run?
There's no final requirements table yet. Rebirth's specs give you an idea of the sort of detail Square Enix tends to publish, but Revelation could easily change how dense the world is, how it streams and which rendering features it uses.
I'd wait for:
the resolution and frame-rate attached to the minimum and recommended specs;
SSD capacity and how much free space it needs;
supported upscalers and frame generation;
how it handles shader compilation;
ultrawide and HDR support;

A new GPU bought before any of that is shopping against a trailer, not a real workload.

A store discount matters, but so do the games you already own there, controller support, cloud saves, family sharing, achievements and how refunds work. Three "PC" versions aren't three identical licences.

If the save bonuses matter to you, stay on the same PC store, because Square Enix needs the saves on the platform where you'll play Revelation. You can absolutely use a different launcher. You just won't get the bonuses, and you don't need them to follow the story.
Which edition is worth it?
The standard digital edition is where I'd start. The digital Premium Edition adds 24-hour early access and a Story Expansion Pass for later Sephiroth and Vincent-and-the-Turks DLC. Premium Plus adds a digital mini soundtrack, an artbook and some equipment. The expansions sound substantial, but Square Enix is planning them for winter 2027 through spring 2028, not launch day.
If you're eyeing a big collector's box, the first question is whether it even has a physical PC disc, then the activation code and region, and whether the game ships separately from the merch. If the box turns up after the global digital unlock, that "launch day" feeling you paid for might not happen.
The Trilogy Edition and Revelation Premium are easy to mix up. The trilogy bundle gets a newcomer the earlier games; Premium adds future content to the final chapter. They're answers to two completely different questions, so neither is simply "the best value".
How long do I need to catch up?
A marketing completion estimate isn't a deadline. Square Enix has given both earlier games Streamlined Progression options, such as unlimited HP and MP and an always-full ATB gauge, for people catching up. I'd play Remake Intergrade first and see if you want to carry on before you buy Rebirth. Rebirth's side content can make it a lot longer, and rushing through it all turns something you're meant to enjoy into admin.
If April comes and you're not done, Revelation will still be there. Waiting might even get you patches, proper PC analysis and cheaper prices across the trilogy. Playing them in the right order matters far more than being there on the first weekend.
Should I buy the earlier games now?
It pays to price up the whole catch-up route first: whether a twin pack or bundle has the exact PC editions you need, whether owning one already knocks the price down, and whether any DLC actually changes the story or just adds gear.
Remake Intergrade is purchase number one. Rebirth is number two. A massive discount on Rebirth isn't a saving if Remake is still sitting unfinished in your library this time next year.
So, preorder or not?
The date, the digital editions and the save bonuses are all nailed down now. Final PC specs and independent performance testing are not. The good news is that a same-day PC release means there's no reason to buy a console copy just to dodge a late port.
I'd look at the standard edition first. Premium is as much a preorder of two future story expansions as it is an upgrade to the launch game; the 24 hours of early access is a small slice of what you're paying for. Price the art, music, gear and cosmetics separately, rather than letting a long list of contents distract you from which extras you'll actually use.
