How to download and use ordnance survey maps

There are various ways you can use OS maps to suit your need. Ordnance survey offers both free and premium accounts, with a range of extra features for premium users. If you have an android or iOS device you can download the app straight to your device and log into your account. From here you will be able to use basics maps as a free user and do things like save routes when you upgrade to a premium user.

There is also a web version which again can be used to free. If you log in to you account on all your devises you can access your saved routes and premium features with one single account.

Once you have logged into your account the next step is finding the location you want to navigate to. If you click the ‘find me’ button, the map will zoom to the location you are currently at and you can have a look around the local area of the map. This can be a great resource in finding where you need to go without a fixed location. If you already know where you want to end up you can search for a town, postcode or grid reference using the search box provided.

There are various map types available for users to select. Navigate to maps via the layer selector button to open up the options. The standard option available is a zoomable map which shows you a street map for you to find the location you are looking to travel to. If you are looking for more detail of the type of terrain in the area then the aerial satellite map is for you. As the name suggests this gives you an aerial image of the area which reveals more data about the terrain and vegetation locally.

OS Leisure Maps gives a range of scales for users to select. Ranging from 1:250000 in the OS road mode all the way to 1:25000 in the OS explorer mode, you are able to make the most of the application no matter the journey you are taking. Looking for more specific details such as parks and other outdoor space for recreation? Switch to the Greenspace mode and the standard map will highlight these areas.

You can even see how steep your terrain is by switching to the aerial 3d view. This is particularly useful for walking and biking if you are looking to avoid the tougher areas. This is one of the many premium features OS maps have to offer. If you are travelling around areas where there isn’t likely to be a mobile signal then you can download maps offline to ensure you have access to the map when you need it most. This can be a real lifesaver in a sticky situation.

To do this select menu and navigate to ‘my offline maps’. From here you can add a custom offline map for you to use. Find the location you wish to download and click on the download button at the bottom of the app. You can name this whatever you like so you can keep track of the different parts of your trip with ease.

If you are unsure of where you want to go or are looking for inspiration then Ordnance survey has you covered. You can find routes created by other OS maps users and other hiking professionals. Navigate to the ‘discover routes’ section to find a new route and use the filters to ensure it is the type of route you are looking to go on. From here you can add the route to your favourites or download it offline so you are good to go when you need it.

If you are travelling a new route and want to build it for yourself or others then the app can record your progress. On the recorder included your directions and distance will be collected while showing the map of the local area on the screen. Once you are finished you can finish the recording and save the route for future navigation, or share with others. This will automatically be synced to the web app to view on your desktop.
