Milan Design Week 2027: Salone or a showroom tour?

"Doing" Milan Design Week is a bit like "doing" the internet. You can't, and trying will just leave you with sore feet and a phone full of taxi receipts. It's actually two overlapping things: the Salone del Mobile trade fair out at Fiera Milano Rho, and Fuorisalone, the citywide sprawl of showrooms, installations and pop-up events. Salone runs 13–18 April 2027, with public access advertised for 17–18 April.

If you're a curious visitor rather than someone with a trade badge, here's what I'd do: one public Salone day plus one carefully chosen city district. That's it. That's the trip.

I love the contrast. Salone is the furniture industry at full volume, all in one place. Fuorisalone turns palazzi, garages, courtyards and shops into temporary galleries. It's great if you're into interiors and objects, but it's also brilliant if you just like watching an entire city show off its taste for a week.

Salone or Fuorisalone?

Go to Salone if you want the industry overview: loads of brands, massive stands and a day at the fair where you can actually compare things side by side. Go for Fuorisalone if you care more about atmosphere, new designers, odd spaces and seeing Milan itself join in. You don't need to be in the trade to enjoy either. But check the public-day rules, the ticket and the opening hours before you pay for flights, not after.

The classic mistake is zigzagging across the city chasing famous names. Pick one district (Brera, wherever Alcova has announced it's going, Isola, Tortona or another confirmed cluster), but only once the official 2027 maps are out. Going deep in one area beats a greatest-hits tour of Milan's traffic.

Salone also posts on YouTube and TikTok. The organiser's footage is good for getting a sense of the scale. What it can't tell you is which 2027 installation will actually be worth queueing for.

How I'd spend two nights

Friday evening: land and wander one city district with nothing booked. Saturday: give the whole day to Salone, then come back into town for dinner and one evening installation. Sunday: walk one Fuorisalone district, and add a permanent design museum or foundation if the temporary venues haven't opened yet.

If public access to Salone is only at the weekend, that's your fixed point. Plan everything else around the fair date. And if you honestly only care about the city programme, skip Rho altogether and put the money you'd have spent on the ticket and transport into a better-located room.

When should I book?

Early. Rooms get snapped up fast during Design Week, so once 13–18 April works for you, book a flexible stay. Then sort the public Salone ticket and anything that needs registering for, since some of it is limited. After that, plan each day around where your top two city events actually are.
