"Doing" Milan Design Week is a bit like "doing" the internet. You can't, and trying will just leave you with sore feet and a phone full of taxi receipts.
What is Milan Design Week?
It's two overlapping things in the same April week. The Salone del Mobile is the furniture and design trade fair out at Fiera Milano Rho, which runs 13–18 April 2027, with public access advertised for 17–18 April. Fuorisalone is the citywide sprawl of showrooms, installations and pop-up events across Milan around it. If you've done London Design Festival, Fuorisalone is the same idea of a city-wide design programme, built around a trade fair.
Why is it such a big deal?
Salone has been the furniture industry's big date since it launched in Milan in 1961. It says more than 370,000 professional visitors come each year, just under 70% of them from abroad, plus around 27,500 members of the public at the weekend. In the UK, "milan design week" and "salone del mobile" are each searched about 1,000 times a month (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026).
Why should you care before you book?
Because the public gets two days of a six-day fair, and the whole city competes for rooms that week. The public day, the ticket and the district decide whether the weekend works; the flights are the easy part.
The short answer: if you're a curious visitor rather than someone with a trade badge, one public Salone day plus one carefully chosen city district, with a flexible room near a good metro line. That's it. That's the trip.
I love the contrast. Salone is the furniture industry at full volume, all in one place. Fuorisalone turns palazzi, garages, courtyards and shops into temporary galleries. It's great if you're into interiors and objects, but it's also brilliant if you just like watching an entire city show off its taste for a week.
Salone or Fuorisalone?
Salone is for the industry overview: loads of brands, massive stands and a day at the fair where you can actually compare things side by side. Fuorisalone suits you if you care more about atmosphere, new designers, odd spaces and seeing Milan itself join in. You don't need to be in the trade to enjoy either. But check the public-day rules, the ticket and the opening hours before you pay for flights, not after.
The organiser's Best of Salone del Mobile 2026 shows the fairground side of that choice: stands, furniture and installations under one roof. It does not cover every independent Fuorisalone event across Milan. The 2027 visitor information is worth reading before booking a public ticket; general admission is listed for 17–18 April.
The classic mistake is zigzagging across the city chasing famous names. The better plan is one district (Brera, wherever Alcova has announced it's going, Isola, Tortona or another confirmed cluster), chosen only once the official 2027 maps are out. Going deep in one area beats a greatest-hits tour of Milan's traffic.
Salone also posts on YouTube and TikTok. The organiser's footage is good for getting a sense of the scale. What it can't tell you is which 2027 installation will actually be worth queueing for.
How I'd spend two nights
Friday evening: land and wander one city district with nothing booked. Saturday: give the whole day to Salone, then come back into town for dinner and one evening installation. Sunday: walk one Fuorisalone district, and add a permanent design museum or foundation if the temporary venues haven't opened yet.
If public access to Salone is only at the weekend, that's your fixed point. Everything else fits around the fair date. And if you honestly only care about the city programme, skip Rho altogether and put the money you'd have spent on the ticket and transport into a better-located room.

When should I book?
Early. Rooms get snapped up fast during Design Week, so once 13–18 April works for you, book a flexible stay. Then sort the public Salone ticket and anything that needs registering for, since some of it is limited. After that, plan each day around where your top two city events actually are.

Technically, yes. But you'll end up with a long, shallow day where you see loads and remember nothing. I'd give Salone the daytime and pick one stop for the evening, or split the fair and the district across two days.
Where should I stay?
Good metro access matters more than being next door to one temporary installation. Both options here work well for Fuorisalone evenings and still connect to the fair at Rho.
