Cornish Sea Salt: what to know before you buy

The story

Cornish Sea Salt started with a walk. Its founder, Tony Fraser, came across the remains of an Iron Age salt works in a cove on Cornwall's south coast and wanted to know why the county had stopped making its own salt. Mined rock salt had simply become easier, so he set out to bring sea salt back to Cornwall, with production inspired by the old methods.

The company has been doing it since 2004 from Gweek, near Helston. The company says its pots sit as happily in Michelin-starred kitchens as on the tables of home cooks.

The water

The salt comes from the Atlantic off the Lizard, a stretch of coast that is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The rocks beneath it, serpentine and gabbro, are rich in magnesium and calcium, and the company puts its salt's mineral profile and taste down to them. It is one of very few sea salt makers harvesting from open water, and the salt is crystallised and harvested by hand.

The range

Flakes are the signature: soft, crunchy and made for crumbling over a finished dish. Crystals suit a grinder or a salt crust, and the smoked flakes bring a smoky note to eggs, meat and roast veg. Then come the seasoning blends, such as Salt & Peppery, Really Garlicky, Roasting Salt and Chilli Hit, plus bundles that group several blends around a meal. Kitchen pieces like salt pigs and pinch pots round it out. Sizes run from small pots for the table to bags for refilling them.

Delivery

Orders go out from Cornwall by Royal Mail tracked services. They deliver across the UK, including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, but not abroad yet. Delivery costs and the free-delivery threshold show in the basket, and it helps to add a safe place for Royal Mail at checkout.

Saving

Bundles cost less than buying the same blends one by one, and bigger bags work out cheaper by weight than small pots. Any live code is listed on this page: copy it and enter it at their checkout. Their terms say discounts can't be combined, so a code won't stack with a sale.

Returns

Changed your mind? Get in touch with them first and give the reason in writing, by email or post. There's no prepaid returns label, so sending items back is at your cost, and the time limits are set out in their terms.
