How do I read this table?

Each row is one way to pay. The cap sets two prices for each fuel: a unit rate for each kWh you use, and a standing charge for each day you're connected. Here's how the Direct Debit row's yearly figure adds up in Yorkshire.

Priced for a medium home: 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year, paying by Direct Debit on a single-rate meter. Staying on the cap comes to about £1,749 over the next 12 months, with the VAT and price changes already set.

How do I read a tariff?

Every row reads the same way. Take E.ON Next's Next Pledge Tracker 12m, part by part.

Supplier and tariff
Who sells it and what it's called. A tracker's rates follow an index, so they can change.
Next 12 months
£1,698, about £142 a month: what it would cost your home over the next 12 months, VAT included, at the use you gave (or a medium home's).
Against the cap
£51 less than the cap, over the same 12 months. Within £5 either way I call it about the same: the estimate isn't that exact.
Unit and standing
Each fuel's unit rate (what each kWh costs) and standing charge (a fixed amount a day), today, in pence with VAT. They're what you'd sign up to, so they're as big as the total.
The small print
How long it lasts, what leaving early costs (here: £25 exit fee per fuel) and how you pay.

How Yorkshire compares

Yorkshire is the 9th cheapest of 14 regions on the cap. A medium home here pays about the Great Britain average of £1,723 a year, and £52 more than in East Midlands, the cheapest.

How you payDirect Debit takes a set amount from your bank each month. Pay on receipt of bill means paying each bill when it comes, which the cap allows a little more for. Prepayment means topping up before you use energy.

How I rank, and how I make money

Cheapest first, on the estimate for your home, with ties in supplier then tariff name order. Commission never changes who's listed or the order. A link to a supplier that pays me may earn me commission if you switch through it; every other link earns nothing.

Suppliers that pay me now: none of them.

What I compare

I compare the tariffs Octopus Energy, EnergyCoop, London Power, E.ON Next, Sainsbury's Energy, EDF and Good Energy publish openly. British Gas, OVO Energy, ScottishPower, So Energy, Utilita and other suppliers don't publish theirs in a form I can use, so they aren't here. The price cap is the most any supplier can charge on a standard variable tariff.

Before you switch

  • Staying put can be the deal. Ofgem's rules stop suppliers keeping a tariff for new customers only, so your own supplier's deals are open to you too. Ask yours what it offers before you move.
  • Warm Home Discount. If you get it, check the new supplier offers it before you switch: not every supplier does, and you could lose it for this winter. About the Warm Home Discount
  • Money owed. Pay by Direct Debit or by bill and owe your supplier money for more than 28 days? It can stop you switching until it's paid. On prepayment you can usually switch owing up to £500, which moves to the new supplier.
  • Exit fees. Leaving a fix early can cost a fee per fuel. In the last 49 days of a fixed tariff there's none to pay.
